I feel like building something?

I have always wanted to build an amp but truly don't have a need for a second amp. I could use a couple more pedals but I've already done that so that project is not as interesting to me.
If I were to build an amp I would want something a little more substantial than a 5E3 I was thinking of a 5E5 Tweed Pro type circuit.
I could buy a pedal kit or two right now, but would have to build the amp in stages.
Which should I build? Which would you build?

Re: I feel like building something?

I dunno what you should build, but I will say this. once you start, you'll be addicted for life.

I built a guitar
I modded my DS-1
I built a guitar rack
I modded my strat
I modded my hamer/slammer
I modded my ibanez
I put electric strings on my acoustic to see what it'd do
I rewired my Sunn Cab
I'm going to mod my Custom 5
And it's not going to stop there, no siree bob!

Lately I've been getting more interested in amp designs, so building an amp would be awesome fun, I just don't know any audio circuit theory.

You could build an amp with footswitchable pedal-esque effects (chorus, reverb, boost, EQ etc)

Re: I feel like building something?

Building guitars is just out of the question for me. I don't have, nor do I have access to any wood working tools.
I do however have access to a soldering station and an oscilloscope, DVOM's and my father in law used to be an electrical engineer with a lot of experience with audio circuits.

Re: I feel like building something?

Build a small marshallesque combo, 2 channels, nails the jtm tone AND the hot rod 800 tone, and a lead boost. 25 watts or so, 12", footswitchable. Send it to me, cause thats what I need. I will even pay for the parts.

I was actually thinking of one of those 18 Marshall dealios. I don't know if I would want standard VIB, or with the TMB channel.

Ehh, thats my problem too. I am trying to find my "perfect" amp, so I can start saving for it, but right now dont know what that is. I am thinking for me it may be one of the 6V6 ones though from what some have told me.

Re: I feel like building something?

Yeah, the more I research things the more options seem cool to me. At least for right now I'm thinking of doing one of them Lightning kits from either Ceriatone, or Trinity. 15 watt voxish flavor in a 112 combo would be a nice contrast to my SF Bassman and 212 cab.

Re: I feel like building something?

How about a single 6V6 Plexi?

I was also looking for a project and stumbled across this. It basically uses a Valve Jr. as the donor chassis, cab and transformers (or you can upgrade the OT) and you build the board, all for around $200 or so.

There's even a free online step-by-step manual and parts list. You can also get help at the sewatt.com forum where there are some clips from completed amps and a long thread about it.

I just received the board a few days ago and am looking for a deal on a used Valve Jr. on craigslist and will then order the components.

Very interesting......

Re: I feel like building something?

I'm pretty sure the project will be a Lightning Clone. However tonight, I'm in the mood to possibly build myself a peanut butter, jelly, and banana sandwich.
