I really like the SSL-1 set for that glassy Strat sound. In my Ash Strat, I needed a bit more warmth, so I left the SSL-1in the bridge because I like the bite and power, but put the APS-1 in the neck and middle. I did try an SSL-3 and a SSL-5, but they were too hot, for me, to balance with either kind of neck and middle pups I had.
One suggestion regardless of what you choose, go with flat pole pieces. That's the one thing I would change.
Oh, and I don't think you're getting ripped off on your guitar, so don't pay that nonsense any attention. Consider the source. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished result!!

You should've gotten a second-hand Yamaha Pacifica 112V, that even in your country can be had for about a Franklin (this model comes with surprisingly good-sounding Alnico 5 p'ups). Perfect glassy, quacky vintage strat sound.
I've even made recordings in the studio with such a low-cost instrument, that happened to marvelously play and perfectly intonate after a good setup.

The guitar is pretty much finished and i will have it next week - i hope.
The final price, incl. shipping it to me (he lives 550'ish miles away) is $320.00 USD.

You might dig the DiMarzio Red Velvets. They are like a hybrid of polite '60's Strat pickups and rude Tele bridge pickups – but more Tele than Strat. And they have a sensible stagger for a plain G.
Also, there is no reason to dislike ceramic magnets as a rule. They just tend to hav a bad rap because they are cheap, and they've been used in many a horrible, garbage, low-rent pickup. A skilled pickup designer can make beautiful sounding pickups using ceramic magnets.

I used to dislike ceramic magnets until I played a Duncan Custom the first time. That's when I realized that you're absolutely correct about them.
