They use Moser's aniline Stains. However what do they mix with those is still a mystery... Mineral Spirits, Oil, Water, Alcool ? It would be interesting to know.

It would be mixed into alcohol most likely, as water-based would raise the grain, and make instability more likely due to wetting the wood. Alcohol also flashes off very quickly, speeding the finishing process as a sealer coat can be almost immediately applied.

Well, stained wood with no clear does look dull as hell......if that is the way the samples have been presented. Its only when clear is added that things start to pop.
