I finally took the plunge...

and the Monster cables will be here in a couple of days. At last check, they had departed Memphis heading my way. (But they sat in Memphis for 24 hours????).

At any rate, we'll see how much difference it makes.

Is there such a thing as cable G.A.S.?

Re: I finally took the plunge...

I use monster cables for my speaker cables on my amps. I can actually tell a difference, but all my friends tell me I'm crazy.

Re: I finally took the plunge...

I use Monster from amp to cabinet as well, but Planet Waves (as they're cheaper and don't coil up as easily) from guitar to amp.

For everything else (Mic's, monitors, pre's, DI's, etc...) it's self-made Mogami w/Neutrik ends. \m/

Oh yeah.... I'm always craving some nice cables, but always end up spending the money on something more "fun" :)

I've decided to pay the company at a pro-rate... I'm supposed to get 54 channels, but only about the lower half come in clear... As such, I'm gonna pay HALF my bill for the half I get clearly....

Forget Cable, I'm GAS'ing for DirectTV or Dish Network about now!!!:laugh2:

Re: I finally took the plunge...

How much looking into Monster did you do?

Somewhere around 5 years ago I decided it was time to "upgrade" my cables. I'd heard of the unconditional lifetime warranty, and I got suckered in on reputation. I bought 3 Monster cables, two expensive ones and one 'less expensive' one. None of them sound any better or different from my old Conquest Audio cables that I've had for 10+ years, except the expensive ones are noisier. The "less expensive" one is less noisy than the expensive ones, and it sounds no different than the CA cables, which I got for around $20 for 25' cables...

Since I've had them, I pretty much only use them at practice and as a backup cable. In the past few years I've read a litany of reasons not to spend money on Monster products. Perhaps the most practical is that the 1/4" connectors are slightly larger than 1/4." That's wonderful if you don't want your cable coming out of your instrument. However, if you use any other cable which IS 1/4" your jack is stretched that much bigger, making it easier for any other cable to come out easier. Less practically, but IMO just as important is Monster's legal tactics against other entities that have the word Monster in them. For a great summation check out http://www.monstervintage.com/ scroll 1/4 of the way down.

Among a few of the other entities hounded down by Monster Cable, The Chicago Bears (the Monsters of The Midway), Monsters of Rock, Snow Monsters (kid's ski instruction), Disney (Monsters Inc) and of course CTW- Cookie Monster. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/artic...hive/2004/11/08/BUG1J9N3C61.DTL&type=business

Re: I finally took the plunge...

Just keep the reciept, and they'll be the last cables you buy. My Monster cables have lasted just fine, but I stapled the reciept to the carboard flat they came with. I don't plan on buying guitar cables again. Lifetime Warrantee.

Re: I finally took the plunge...

Good idea, Joe. I ordered from Sweetwater, and their service is exceptional.

Re: I finally took the plunge...

I'm sure the legal stuff doesn't matter if their cables are good quality, with a lifetime warranty. I've never tried any of the myself but I'm curious now because of what people are saying...

Re: I finally took the plunge...

Monster makes a good cable, but they aren't any more durable than any other type of cable in my experience. One of the guys in my band splurged for Monsters for himself, me and our bassist about a year ago, and now only one of the three still works and it cuts out occasionally (granted the cables did take a pretty good dose of day-to-day abuse). I find Mogami to be just as good.

Re: I finally took the plunge...

I have one for guitar to amp stuff.

It was given to me by a buddy that doesn't play anymore.

had he not done that kind gesture I would have died without ever owning one and I would of been fine with it.

Re: I finally took the plunge...

I used to have my whole rig outfitted with Monster Rock cable, mains, patches and their speaker cable as well. After the main cables died on me for the third time I'd had enough.

I replaced the main cables with Canare (Bayou Cables), Geroge L's for the pedal board and Redco (Bayou) for speakers. HUGE improvement in my sound, not a subtle change, a very noticeable one. I've had this set up for awhile now with no problems at all. And, the new cables cost far less. It sounded like a blanket had been lifted off of my 4X12 just from switching the speaker cable alone, and my overall sound was much cleaner and clearer. I say go Bayou or Lava cables, no Monsters ever again!

Cheers,

CJ

Re: I finally took the plunge...

No, Bill, I was planning to do some more recording last night, but I fell asleep. It's been a tough week for my allergies, and between the antihistamine haze and the disrupted sleep, I've been functioning at somewhat less than normal.

Re: I finally took the plunge...

I stopped using Monster for two main reasons:

1. Durability issues. I seem to go through monsters a little more than most when I did use them, and I stopped using them because I found Planet Waves Cables to be much more durable while sounding just as good. When I worked at Guitar Center for a year, I had maybe 3-5 defective Monster cables brought back to me every week, and of course we exchanged them for new ones, no questions asked per the Lifetime Warranty. Planet Waves has the same deal on their cables and we treat them the same way... I had ONE Planet Waves Cable returned to me in that time period, and the PW's outsold Monster 2 to 1. You do the math.

2. Predatory Legal Action - I refuse to support any company that takes such predatory, vicious, malicious legal action against other totally unrelated companies in other industries on the basis that they share a word in their names. It's on par with suing Michael Jordan and Nike because you bear a physical resemblance to the former.

It sucks finding out about this stuff after you've laid down the cash. It's not until you're actually in a recording studio and the engineer asks you to use a different cable because the one you're using is making too much noise to record with...

Next time you need cables, there's a guy in your neck of the woods that makes some good stuff. I just ordered my second cable from him. www.bayoucables.com

Re: I finally took the plunge...

I use these 10 foot long cables from Long & McQuade.. Yorkville I believe they are called. They work perfectly well, dont muss up my one and havent shorted out in the two years I've had them *though I just jinxed it*

See, this is the thing....

Ya gotta make your money back. Use the things as a tie-down on the car. Bring one water-skiing. Take the dog for a walk. Did your sister lose her jump rope? Roommate been feeling a little down and considering suicide? Make a noose (rabbit goes through the hole....) Tie it between two trees and hang your laundry.

Get your moneys worth out of them before giving up!
