I finally understand all of the Corgan love

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

Looks like it might be on...

I'm pretty jealous, I've got to say.

This isn't your first foray into fuzz, is it? Because if so, that's a hell of a first pedal. I can't wait to hear what you think of it - I think a muff would be a good pedal for you. I've owned a few now and they all constantly surprise me with how toneful they are.

Not quite. I've got a Devi Ever Bi-Fuzz, a Brit Bender and a Black Arts Toneworks Black Forest. The latter isn't truly a fuzz, but it can get that way in its upper reaches. Other than that, it's just what I can play with in the POD.

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

Oh that's cool. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on that pedal as both a lover of muffs and an appreciator of fine boutique effects. The demo sounded absolutely incredible with that strat - hopefully it will sound good with humbuckers.

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

...edit...
That lead me to The Smashing Pumpkins. I've had Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie for years (dad must have downloaded them a long time ago) but I never listened to them much for whatever reason, which is odd because apart from Nirvana I ****ing love grunge. Anyway, Billy Corgan's tone:

It's a wall of muff. How can you not love it? The more I listen to Siamese Dream, the more I want more variants of the big muff. I know he used a V3 (if I have the versions right) op-amp based muff as opposed to the transistor based BMP's that most of us know and love.

...edit...

Something I don't think everyone is considering is that part of the tone on the recording of Siamese Dream was created by the onboard channel compressors of the SSL board in the studio they were using. It would be worthwhile to get a hold of some quality recordings of their live sound (do these exist?) to compare the raw guitar sound, sans studio production.

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

I was staying at the House of Blues in Chicago about 5 years ago for a corporate meeting. We were hanging out watching the house band play one night and there was rumor that Kid Rock was going to be there to sit in with the band. Instead, Billy Corgan came out and played for over an hour. It was awesome, I had no idea he was that good.

Not to mention, Corgan loves to have layers and layers of guitar tracks on one song.

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

Bumping this thread because I've got yet another muff coming to me in the next few days. Thanks PGS!

My muff trifecta will soon be complete. Muahahahaha

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

I SO JELLY

Holy christ that's an amazing collection. I particularly like the vintage IC and the Supercollider. I had one of the newest supercolliders for about a week but foolishly returned it because I thought it was too heavy for the music I was playing at the time. Of course now that I'm in a doom band, I miss it with all of my heart.

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

Yeah, the Supercollider is one of my favorite pedals period. I love getting my doom on with it. The Skreddys are really awesome too, especially the Zero. The Zero and the Supercollider can be tuned to really cut through and emphasize picking/palm muting where some of the other ones are more "wall of sound" (which is equally cool, but in a different way).

Pretty sure for live playing he didn't mess with the muffs, but rather used a Marshall JMP-1 preamp.

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

This is the one I want
bigtonemusic.com/royalbeaver.html

Royal beaver huh? nice name! Wonder if the band Bush uses a big muff? Sorry, had to thro out da pun..

In seriousness, Ive never played through a muff. Whats the differences? do the normal big muff pedals vary like the rats do? or is it just versions by diff brands? Id like to get a muff and a rat one of these days.

Actually, yes... The Sixteen Stone sound is total Big Muff. :p Essentially the older ones went through several generations using various transistors, then IC chips, and that imparts a difference on tone. Also, the tone stack is a very unique design that sweeps two filters in parallel giving you a scooped mid or band-stop/notch filter. This makes it sound huge for a fuzz, but can make it get lost in the mix or live. A lot of the versions built by other builders are tweaking the tone stack to cut through the mix, or sit better in a live situation, things that may have required EQ or boosting to do with a standard muff.

Another unique thing about the muff design is that it is a four-stage gain cascade, giving the signature saturated tone. Because of this you don't get any of the sputtering that you find with other vintage fuzzes. Some of the builders will tweak the gain stages, allowing you to drop them off to reduce saturation or add/remove treble/bass in between some of the stages to further shape the tone. It's a fun pedal for a builder because its not as sensitive to minute changes like a Fuzz Face but you can actually change the tone substantially unlike modding a Tube Screamer circuit.

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

What PFDarkside said. There's a reason I have two muffs on my board with a third one coming tomorrow. The differences betweeen each circuit are astounding. I mean, take a look at the demo of the blakemore fuzz in the original post and then watch one of the other vids in that post. They sound so different, it surprises even me sometimes.
