I finally understand all of the Corgan love

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

I have moved the clip internal trimmer all the way up but still farty , have not touched the intensity trim pot yet though

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

How do you like the swollen pickle, I just got mine but I can't seem to get it to not sound farty

By "farty" do mean sputtery like a fuzz that is under biased or as in overdriving the bass so much that it's loose and undefined? I took this pic after unboxing all my pedals, I need to refresh my memory how it compares to some of the other Muffs. As I recall there's an obnoxious amount of bass so I can see the bass as being undefined, but not sputtery.

I've got one of these:

Think it's supposed to be based on a Muff . . . it's noisy, spluttery, bassy, but all in a good way somehow. I never really understood the fuzz pedal love before spending some time playing this thing. Anyone else try one?

not sure its not the good kind of sputtery sound its like a farty buzzy sound.... not pleasant!

Try messing with the scoop control, it has a big effect on the bass response (in addition to the obvious), and the crunch control also can help ya clean up the bass a bit. Right around 9 o'clock an it'll start to clear up. Also try turning the clip trimmer all the way to the LED side, gives the bass a bit clearer sound, with less clipping on the low end....Really pretty much every knob on the SPmkII has an effect on the low end, its a balancing act. Turn the fuzz up too high and it'll get boomy and farty, tone too low, same deal.

anyway moving on...Songs with muff....

My bands new Album is chock full of muff. Lots of BMP into a Bassman +412.
The first track, is pretty much all a Russian BMP, and a little Swollen pickle (the ending is a Green Rhino into the SPmkII)...Even the bass was recorded with that same Russian BMP.

Also, this song is free to download right now...

Though its not as full of BMP as the first one...there's still tons of That russian BMP, a Swollen Pickle MkII, a Bass bigmuff (on the guitar), and the melody lines (mixed real low) are a Voodoo Labs Super Fuzz (kinda muffish sounding, but not extremely) into a Way huge Fat sandwich.

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

I had an original Swollen Pickle and it was fairly easy to dial in. Sounds like they put too many controls on the reissue version. Or perhaps the old ones just sounded better overall. I don't know. I've never played one of the reissues.

Having played Both, the new one (its not a reissue, and isn't intended to be), actually does sound just as good as the original, and can sound just like it (set the Scoop control to 10 O'clock, Crunch all the way down, don't mess with the internal knobs)....The additional controls just make it more versatile.
The scoop control makes it useable in a band/live setting (original is too scooped, and disappears in a live band setting. Just like BMP's do.). Since you can actually have a flat eq curve, or even a little bump in the mids. The crunch knob lets you adjust the amount of compression. So you can get the classic super compressed BMP/SP sorta sound, or a more open Fuzz Face style fuzz, and anywhere inbetween. Which, also helps it cut through a mix, and work better in a live/band setting. The internal controls are really generally very subtle, and just offer a couple extra tweaks to make the Pedal more usable.
So basically, its not a reissue. Its meant to be an improvement upon the original (hence the MkII in the name). Meant to make it a more versatile/usable version of the basic BMP style fuzz.

Also, Its really not difficult to dial in at all. The originals also have a massive low end, and can sound Boomy/farty/mushy through certain rigs, and at certain settings. Any muff style fuzz is capable of sounding mushy/farty. Just a matter of turning knobs till things sound good.
That said, the additional controls DO also make it possible to make the pedal sound just terrible. Cranking any of the controls to 10 (on the original or reissue) is a great way to make some really ugly sounds. Pretty much every way huge pedal is like that. Theres a huge range to the controls. So while its easy to get a lot of great sounds out of them, its also pretty easy to get some truly horrible sounds out of them too.
But really....even with Five external controls and two inside...They're still just ****ing knobs, you twist em until stuff is sounding groovy/not ****ty. Haha

Just did a comparison between my Original Clone and MKII and I agree, vastly different boxes. The Original is classic huge BM tone with a scooped mid and grainy treble. The MKII is definitely intended to boost mids to cut through a band, but I'm having to set the fuzz much higher than the original. Also, I see what you mean by the farty bass. It's a unique pedal for sure in the world muffs...

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

Funny story.

I too was searching for the IC Big Muff sound. I settled for a newer big muff, but I never satisfied with all the bass that thing has. I saw a Deluxe Big Muff for sale on ebay in a town about 1 hour away from me. Long story short, I bought it. It wasn't working right, the compressor mostly. I ended up sending it to Howard Davis (who engineered the deluxe Big Muff and I think the original IC Muff). So he fixed it and sent it back. Loving it! I'll have to make a video with it.

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

I realized last week my Skreddy Mayo is going for $500+ dollars on eBay.:eyecrazy:

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

I love the NYC Big Muff Pi... it cops SP Siamese Dream tones easily with the right amp and can also get a more bassy QOTSA sound with the sustain rolled back and tone too.. very versatile.

I highly recommend !

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

excellent muff thread
:naughty:
i love those first few backwards slides at the start of 'quiet' too. it's a great album
like PFD said, the only real way to get a muff to sound like that is to track it 60+ times; we'd probably all be better off with chorus pedals

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

hey all, I have to revive this thread for pumpkins purposes. I'm looking to cop the siamese dream sound, in particular cherub rock. I've been looking at the various muffs clones and I've noticed, by the youtube videos I've checked out, some of the ic muff clones are really a miss for the smashing pumpkins sound. Now I know different gear and guitars ect will sound different, but I'm saying their not even remotely close. I have a deluxe big muff I'm selling for other reasons (space on board and power supply as it has its own).

I'm not only looking to cop the pumpkins sounds, I want to use that tone and customize it myself for my own purposes. I've decided a clone is the way to go, because the older ones aren't true bypass, and they've been beat to hell for 30+ years. I'm thinking about the Blakemore Effects Dreamsicle (because of the mids option) and the royal beaver looks cool but it has way too many knobs and buttons. Anyone have suggestions?

Re: I finally understand all of the Corgan love

no need to go for a overpriced clone, just get the NYC Big Muff PI reissue... It nails the Siamese dream tone with some tweaking and its very versatile, I go from SP to QOTSA/Kyuss with mine with a twist of the Sustain or tone knob
