It doesn't quack if you split the buckers?

True about a rig sounding not so hot with one setting when tweaked for another. One of the better arguments for modelers, IMO.

It doesn't sound like the kind of "quack" that true singles make, at least not to me.

Ah. OK, I'll buy that. For the same reason I got buckers that were made to split - a Stag Mag in the neck and an SK dualtone in the bridge. In A/Bs with "real strats", they're right up there on the combination tones, IMO. Not identical, but neither are 2 strats, and mine are "in the running".

The bucker sounds aren't the best possible, but they're a great compromise, IMO.

It's kind'a a cool Blues thing... Jimmie Vaughan, Buddy Guy etc... at the right times, it can come off with a lot of raw attitude. Sounds real good through a Leslie! Or if you just want to change up the tone for a mean section of a solo. You gotta play with an additude with the middle PU I think! It diffenatly will cut through...

Re: I find I have NO use for a middle pickup except..........

I used to have no use for the Strat middle pickup -- it got in the way too often with hybrid picking, and I am not too keen on the 2/4 notch tones to begin with. However, I recently got a Fender CS Strat -- a Wildwood 10 50's relic -- with custom voiced pickups, and it has the nicest middle pickup tone that I've ever heard. The bottom tone control is wired to the middle and bridge pickups, so I can get some wonderful tonal shadings with this Strat. It has made me re-evaluate the middle pickup, and I've raise them up and am learning to pick around 'em.

So, I have found that I really like the sound of a good Strat middle pickup with the tone control rolled off a bit to a lot (for a heavy wah kind of tone in the latter case with heavier OD). Since I wired 2 of my Strats with no tone control for the middle, they yield nice 2/4 tones but less versatile middle pickup-alone tones. The SCNs in my AmDeluxe Strat with a no-load tone control for the bridge and middle sounds very good, too -- smoother than vintage, but very versatile and quiet.
