I Fudged Up

First of all, thanks for welcoming me into this awesome forum. I used to come here all the time about 6 years ago (formally known as fenderbass6), but I forgot my password!

On to my delimma:

I'm an idiot. I bought this brand new 2016 DSR-GC for nearly nothing due to there being a fairly large Crack in the back. I've rehumidified the guitar for about a week and noticed that the two halves were uneven (one side higher then the other) after they finally grew together. Because I'm about as hard headed as they come, I decided to fix it myself using a dulled razor blade and some super glue. The super glue got spilled, and here is the result after sanding, wet sanding, steel wool etc etc.. the guitar has a satin finish on it, so yeah I messed that up. Should I go ahead and polish the rest of the guitar or should I sand off the awful super glue and try an aerosol satin finish and blend? I'm lost.

The lighter color you see is where I've accidentally went through the finish.

Thanks.

Re: I Fudged Up

The finish will never ever stick to the super glue
So if I were you I would just accept it as is
Not point at it when company comes by
Its on the back so no one will ever see it unless you have a habit of hanging it up face down

What a colossally ignorant load of bull! Super glue is now used frequently by repairmen because it works with ANY finish, even functioning AS a finish if applied by a competent luthier.

Not to worry, 23dmorris - gently sand the super glue using a very small block to keep it flat. When it's almost level, go to finer grades of abrasives, and polish to your desired sheen. If you over polish it, use Scotchbrite to scuff it back to dull.

Super glue sticks to just about anything even damp surface like fresh wound.

As for the damage being on the back, it obviously matters otherwise we wouldn't seen guitars with the back finished.

Re: I Fudged Up

Well I think I've made a little progress.

I've gotten rid of most of the super glue, which took the finish with it. I've ordered some nitro satin lacquer from stewmac. My plan is to tape off the bad area, spray a few coats of the satin, and blend. Fingers crossed. I can update when the lacquer gets here if anyone is interested.

Re: I Fudged Up

I have used superglue for bigger cracks than that and every time i did it turned out fine.

I followed some stewmac guide and never looked back.

Re: I Fudged Up

Well, the repair was really easy. The part that sucked was when I spilled the super glue on the guitar by mistake lol. Hence the ugly glob. Here's what the Crack looked like before for reference:

Re: I Fudged Up

Now, is the guitar poly or nitro finished? If you mismatch, you might have some trouble getting them to blend well.

Re: I Fudged Up

Just for reference for 'next time', tape off the sides around the scratch so that you only apply superglue to the crack and barely beyond. You then peel the tape back one dry, and use a razorblade with a bit of tape on either end to take the buildup down to very close to level.

As to your current plan.....simply tape off the sides and give the whole back a coat. You will not find much satisfaction in trying only to cover a small area without a ridge.

You need to tape your blade on both ends. So only the the non taped area scraps the superglue in the middle.

Re: I Fudged Up

I ended up refinishing and I think it looks remarkable. Thanks everyone for their input!

Re: I Fudged Up

Awesome
My buddy couldn't get tung oil to stick to the super glue he filled holes with
Just beaded up and pulled away

I stand corrected

Re: I Fudged Up

It actually wasn't that bad. Just need a lot of patience and a steady, light hand.
