Frito's Better Half
A nice friendly gentlemen showed up today in a very large brown truck. Look at what he brought me.

I don't know what year it is, I don't know what pickups are in it. I know they're SD's and that this thing looks absolutely brand new. Not a mark, not a scratch, or a divot in the frets.

USA G&L ASAT Classic in butterscotch blond. I found where SX got their tele neck profile and fret size from. This bad boy, that's where. The SX tele I had was an absolute dead ringer for this neck.

The profile of the neck is just awesome. I was a little worried, after playing a MIM Strat, MIK Bullet, and MIM 50's strat these past few practices with their small and narrow necks. It would cause my hand to cramp up after just a few songs. But not with this baby. No way no how. Real nice and beefy, and the frets are great. Very well rounded, polished, and great profile.

The body is a little heavy, but fine by me. I like a little heft. It's real resonant. The G&L website says it's Alder, but hell, it could be ash and I couldn't tell ya ;)

My only two problems with it (and you won't hear me complaining) is the plastic nut, and the fact that it's just too clean.

Dave, thanks a million dude. You're truly awesome, and if you ever need anything, and I mean anything, don't hesitate to let me know.

*Edit*

Since I now have Dave's permission, I shall name her Mallory. My first girlfriend back in kindergarden, and also the first blond I can remember. So Mallory it is guys.

Re: I gladly walk amongst you...NGD

I question your parentage. :biglaugh: I want that!

Re: I gladly walk amongst you...NGD

Is it against the rules to name a guitar that's being loaned to you?

Re: I gladly walk amongst you...NGD

so that makes 2 telecasters?

i see a pattern. :D

its sweet you get to play that thing.

Re: I gladly walk amongst you...NGD

so youll have a white tele with black guard and black tele with white guard. sweet!

Re: I gladly walk amongst you...NGD

That's REAL pretty! Enjoy and make it quack a few times. :approve:

^^^^^ If you name it, you'll only get attached to it and be sad to see it go.

It's like naming that stray dog only to have your mother to throw it out of the house and your father to take it to a shelter.

I dunno about that. In the later years, Mallory became quite the C U Next Tuesday.

We have a G&L ASAT Classic in our sound room. It's the only guitar I've ever played where I'd use the word "erotic" to describe the neck.

Nice score.

Re: I gladly walk amongst you...NGD

Great looking Asat! That's not butterscotch blonde. If you can't see the wood grain through the finish then it's vintage white. If you can see it then it's just plain blonde. I'm 99% sure it's vintage white. If you want to make that guitar better, ditch the plastic string retainer block for a brass one. Taipan Tone, makes a great string block for Asat Classic's that really bring them to life! http://www.taipantone.com/pages/ToneBar.html

EDIT

I now see that you were talking about the retainer block, for some reason I read string tree block. I'll look into it for sure. I've got some brass lying around. Possibly make one for myself.

After really spending some time with it, and getting to know where it really shines and not so much I'm still extremely happy. I'l be slapping some 10's or 11's on this bad boy tomorrow, as well as cutting a new nut. Do a setup on it, and I can only imagine how bright this baby will shine.

I talk to Big Joe, who owned the guitar before Dave, and apparently Brian (Newking) is the original owner...Mid 06 from the serial, and it's loaded with a SD JD in the bridge and an alnico 2 pro in the neck.

Mallory really resonates, I can feel it in my chest whenever I strike a chord. I really can't wait to hear how this thing sounds plugged in. Since I'm headed to the music store tomorrow to pick up strings, I figured I'd bring Mallory with me and really crank it out.

I still can't believe that Dave would do something like this. And so far, I've gotten so much help from fellow members, it's overwhelming. I can't believe there are people so generous out there.

I'll try to take some better pics tomorrow at the store.
