I Got a New Amp

Re: I Got a New Amp

I hate it when the horizontal hold on my monitor goes out. looks like a screen shot from a kidnapping video. "if you ever want to see this amp alive again...."

congrats!

Re: I Got a New Amp

You probably used to hate me because I'd post new amp days all the time. Now, you're one of us! :bigok: And I can't even keep track. Didn't you just get a 90's OR a week or two ago?

Re: I Got a New Amp

That absolutely slays.
You had to have made a pact with Satan for that one.
Well, at least you got a good deal- I sold my soul for a lot less than that.

Re: I Got a New Amp

I've been busier than I expected to be so I haven't had a photo session -- sorry.

I didn't exactly make a pact with Satan. The OR120 had the tone that I wanted but it didn't have a master volume so it was only fun if it was ridiculously loud. I was reading about modding the amp when this thing went up on Reverb.com, so I read more about it and found out it was basically an OR120 with master volume and green tolex. I already had the green Matamp 4x12 and green Electric 6x12 sooo I put everything I could up for sale on Craig's List and happened to get a response from a dude at Black Arts Toneworks. So he's the proud new owner of my older Orange 4x12 and I have the green stack I've been dreaming of for a decade.

Dreams come true, guys.

Re: I Got a New Amp

Wwwwwwwwooooowwwww! Congratulations EP! Here's wishing you tons of tone fun with that beauty. Cheers!

Re: I Got a New Amp

"tons of tone" is a really great way to put it.

The tone knobs are super interactive. I can get that "typical" Orange / Matamp doom roar but with the Bass Boost ("FAC" on an Orange OR) knob turned down I can get into Marshall and Vox territory. Great for those times when you just want to plug in, EQ the amp and rock the **** out. It has tons of gain on tap but at really high gain levels it gets into square-wave Big Muff kind of sounds that might turn some folks off but I dig that sound.

Not to mention it has slave outputs so I can use its preamp to slam the front end of my other amps...

Re: I Got a New Amp

That sounds like a wonderful thing, man. Congrats!

You mention it gets fuzzy if you put some serious gain.
Does it still do that if you dial the gain back and slam the front with a boost of some sort?

Just curious about it. I have no experience at all with Matamp or Orange amps but I think I sort of understand what tone they go for.

Re: I Got a New Amp

I took a while to respond to this because I couldn't figure out how to dial out the fuzziness. It never really bothered me because I like fuzziness but your question really made me think about the flexibility of the amp.

I had it hooked up to the left half of my 6x12 and tried every setting I could think of but always had this fizzle in the low-mids that wouldn't go away. Then last night I remembered what a huge part the speaker plays in your overall tone and I did this:

Eureka. They sound like they were designed to go together. What a weird coincidence huh? The Hot 100's have plenty of lows for when I want to do the low-tuned sludgey doom stuff, but I can dial back the Bass Boost, turn up the Presence and get a sweet Marshallesque tone. I sat around jamming Weezer-ish rock riffs for an hour this morning.

It's a sweet rock amp. Highly recommended.

That reads like pure success man. :D
