I would bet you that I could put you in a room blind folded, I would play 2 different amps (one tube and one not but, you wouldnt know this) and I bet you would say they were both tube amps! I could probally do the samething with 2 different solid state or modeling amps and you would still say that they are tube amps!
I agree. The thing that most people here seem to forget is that tube amps are made to be turned up. I'd like to know where you fellas crank your 120W 5150's. I gotta agree with theodie on this one. At low volumes when you can't *feel* the amp (like when it's cranked) they sound the same.

I'm not going to tell you to not get a 5150 but just know that EVH's tone was amazing because he cranked his amps. Supposedly that's why the 5150 is more trebly than the Marshalls he used...he killed his high end hearing from cranking his amps and needed extra treble to compensate for the loss.

Either way if you want real bad ass metal tone (IMO) you have to get a M/B Mark series amp. I hear LOG uses Mk IV's anyway....that's where I'd start. It'll cost you more but I think it would be worth it.

While LoG does use Mark IV's, if LambOfGod wants "metal tone out the ass" then the 5150 is by far the way to go.

Re: i got the $600 bucks what amp????????

The 5150 block letter amps are the same as the signature ones, im a member of the peavey amp forum and this question has been asked there a few times.

There are 2 versions of the 5150

the 5150 known as the Mk1
and the 5150II .... Mk2

the 5150II has an extra preamp valve/tube and a seperate eq for the clean channel, some say that the mk1 sounds better but most of the bands ive seen have used the 5150II.

I use a 5150Mk1 head through a Marshall 1960A cab and its as metal as you can get, you can nail the lamb of god tone there pretty easy. The 5150 is extremely loud and even on the lowest volumes it is pretty loud, i wouldent say it sounds bad at low volume but it needs to be up at about 2 or more to get its full potencial (2 is really loud), the clean channel is a bit lacking, though the tone isnt bad, its quiet, with my jem i have to have the clean gain at 3 to get a clean sound and its nowhere near as loud clean as it is on distortion, though it is loud enough to gig easily.

As an example i played a gig tonight where the amps werent mic'ed up, im in a metal band, i was running through an Orange 2x12 cab with V30's, the amp doesnt sound that great through that cab to be honest, anyway back on topic the Clean Post volume was on 7 and the gain at 3 (the gain is a big factor on volume, but its not long till clean turns to crunch) and the lead channel Post volume at about 3.4 with the pre gain at 5.

+1,000,000

Tube amps NEED to be cranked to get THAT sound. It's just the physics of it. For most bedroom amps anything over 6 watts is WAY overkill. If the amp is to never leave the bedroom then its like buying a Porsche or a Lamborghini and never taking it out of first gear.

I own 4 combo amps...none of which are over 22 watts...and I can gig all of them (and do!)

If I had to have an amp that sounded great at low volumes the obvious pick would be a digital amp that effectively made the same sound of a cranked amp, but at a lower volume.

It's almost become a pattern here....someone buys a gargantuan 100 watt amp and then complains that it sounds terrible. Of course it sounds terrible;you'll never get it loud enough in your bedroom to sound like it should and all you've done is buy an oversized and underutilized PA for your pedals!

Hehe I guess I'm in the minority; I crank mine everyday.

That said, it's also in the garage, which is behind our house (as opposed to the usual front).

Re: i got the $600 bucks what amp????????

i didn't know that the peavey had the 5150II

All that i tested out lately was the JSX, its cooool

But for 600 bucks, I think a fender blues Jr would be fine
