I got your cranked amp tone right here....

If you followed my Mullard RI thread, you know I ended up pulling out the Marshall Class5 for sheets and giggles and putting a MRI84, and MRI12ax7 in V1 (shugangB in V2). V30 cab.

It still is a class 5 and without mods probably wont ever smooth out or tighten up like it's Big Bruthas (and maybe still will not), but I made a couple clips anyway..I bet it would record nice like this in studio and sit in a mix well.

WATCH THE LEVELS AT FIRST- Zoom onboard limiter takes a second.

First up is the "all on 10" clip: Volume on 1 oclock. BMT @ 10. all of (a horrible rendition of) 2112 Overture is on there (MXR78BA on for the lead).

second is a noodle, but I backed off the B(9oclock)M(noon) and T(noon). Volume still on 1 oclock. Its a bit mellower, not as raspy...and I am just using the guitars volume here for cleans.

one thing I noticed is the Class5 does not like my reecho out in front like the H&K does. Sounds small and pingy.

Re: I got your cranked amp tone right here....

On a hunch I threw the mullard x7 into V2, and put a Svetlana in v1, and it smoothed out quite a bit.....no time tonight, will hafta make a comparison clip tomorrow or wednesday.

Re: I got your cranked amp tone right here....

This is the best the Class 5 has sounded but it still sounds boxy to me. I like the sound the TM has, which is it sounds like a big ass amp.

Re: I got your cranked amp tone right here....

Yeah, its a 5w amp with one el84 and a 1x12 cab. It def sounds boxy, like a miniature marshall ;) . I am sure a 4x12 would help alot...or.reverb..

I am also recording in a carpeted room

The TM definitely sounds bigger even at 5watts...the marshall is all midrange, and the TM is big low end, and top end.

Re: I got your cranked amp tone right here....

I'd love to hear the Class 5 through a 4x12 or 2x12 .... Diggin it for that classic crunch... I'd love to hear a fuzz thrown in front but that is just the fuzz addict in me talking!

Re: I got your cranked amp tone right here....

Wanna downsize the volume but keep the Marshall crunch? That 4x12.... not exactly your friend. 5w cranked through a 4x12 gets neighbourhood grannies bangin on your garage door, even @ 1pm on a THURSDAY.

And, anyway, if not for the quietness, why get a Class 5? Laneys do "cranked Marshall" far better than Marshall ever did unmodded, and have plenty of used offerings 15-50w for <$350. *aaaaand* some of the 50 watters got this lil attenuator built into the back panel, letting you go whisper quiet higain
