I guess I should introduce myself as well...

I saw that Son Of Monster made a thread to introduce himself and I figured I shoud probably do the same.

I'm an old fart. I turn 45 in a couple of weeks. I'm mostly a bass player. But I play AT everything else. I'm a mediocre guitarist and craptacular keyboardist. But I mostly only play keys to write. I can't picture taking a keyboard to a jam.

My main reason for looking in here was to get ideas for the modification projects on my Epiphone Dot and Hamer Archtop Import.

The Dot had already been made into essentially a counterfeit 335. But it plays REALLY well, so I'll overlook that. I'm thinking it needs P Rails and Triple Shots.

I haven't decided about the Hamer. But I've got lots of time.

Welcome to the forums! You will learn a lot here - I've learned a lot about pickups just by listening in from the sidelines around here. :)

Thank you Wymore Guitars, my sentiments exactly. Hey bard2dbone, welcome to the UGF. We're glad to have you. But be careful about this place. It can be addicting...

Welcome! Sounds like some fun projects going on!

What is the model name of the Hamer?
Actually, I'm never really sure.

They usually get called 'The Archtop' or 'The Studio Archtop' more than anything else, even though it's a solidbody more like a double cutaway Les Paul than an arched top jazz box. I've also seen them named after the finish that several of them had, even if the guitar in question didn't have that finish. Okay that sounded wierd. But it's not as wierd as asking "Could you hand me that sunburst archtop withthe gold top?" It's just a carved top like a Les Paul, not an archtop like a jazz box.

I usually refer to it as the poor mans PRS Santana.

I know all too much about GAS inducing gear forums. I can't tell you how much TalkBass.com and The Gear Page.net have cost me over the years.

Epiphone Sheraton with P-Rails and two mini toggles. Great tone machine, your Dot should be just fine.

Re: I guess I should introduce myself as well...

I just had a play on a Hamer sunburst archtop flametop (you are right, their names suck). It sounded pretty good, and quite bright. It would probably be quite good after a thorough set up. I thought a set on prails in that guitar would have worked well.

Welcome.

Well... if it's good for you, can you call it an "addiction"?

Nothing odd about your name description attempt. Hamer has been known to have different "official" names for the same model!

Re: I guess I should introduce myself as well...

The tag just said it was a SATF model. But I knew that stood for Sunburst Archtop Flamed, which is silly because mine is a natural finish. They drive me nuts with that.

The Hamer is going to get a couple of high output humbuckers of some kind. But I haven't decided which yet.

Right now I'm getting kind of excited planning on this Dot.

I'm a little disappointed in the pots. (Seriously, if a previous owner was going to get the headstock reshaped to a Gibson shape, why didn't he upgrade the #$%* pots to Gibson quality, too? And the pickups?!?! But then I couldn't have got her for $200. *sigh*) so I think I'm going to give her to my guitar guy (Kerry's Guitar Shop, Bedford TX. He kicks ass.) and have him put in the P-Rails and TripleSHots in and switch out all the pots and selector switch.

Right now that's all the guitar modding I'm planning. That might change. I mostly think if you're going to record, there are only three basic types of electric guitar tone and I'll have a good example of each. I may decide there are more types later.
