Hi all,

I found this thread while looking at my 'tracker'.
I make the Surfpicks.

Jimi ... I also cannot wear down the Lignum Vitae picks..
but some people are able to do so.
I think it has something to do with the angle of attack?
If a person tends to wear out ordinary picks..
they'll probably be able to wear out mine.

Things like string grinding, of course, will wear the pick.
A wound guitar string is like a file, when something
is moved against it vertically.. and although Lignum Vitae
is the world's strongest wood.. it is still wood.

Ra

Wow those things look cool! shame i dont live in america, and welcome to the forum Ra!

Re: I hate it when picks wear out!!!!!

Thanks for the welcome people.

I've never tried a Seymour Duncan...
but I'm a firm believer in upgrading to a quality pickup,
after reading the testimonials on the bill lawrence site.
I bought a few of his pickups.. but never got them installed.

I've dealt mostly with acoustics. I started with a bunch of Guilds..
then got into Gibsons. I still deal in Gibsons.. but I've also
gotten into Goodall and Larrivee.
My latest acquisition is a Heritage jazzbox.

This looks like a nice forum.

best regards,

Re: I hate it when picks wear out!!!!!

hmmm, now im confused. one person said ultexes never wore down and another said they did

In my experience, nylon picks have the best wear. I've also tried celluloid, tortex, ultex, and delrin, too. Delrin wears out the fastest, and ultex leaves white powdery stuff on your guitar from it shredding. I play in ska and hardcore bands, so I do lots of strumming.

IMO I would say to just use the pick that has the best feel to you, and buy a lot of them so that you don't have to worry about wearing them out. I usually buy them by the 1/2 gross (72), and that lasts a pretty long time. I only wish they sold ultex in those quantities.

I don't know what that guy is talking about. I use Ultex exclusivly and have never worn a pick down even a little bit. Just buy a pack of six and see for yourself. :smoker:

Re: I hate it when picks wear out!!!!!

I go through picks like dental floss. I just buy a gross at a time, and plan to burn through them. I have this habit of sliding the pick down the strings prior to starting a solo. It's really Eighties, but I still like the way it sounds. Unfortunately, with stainless steel strings, it tears up the pick, too. The thing is, no other pick sounds like I want that slide to sound like Fender Heavy Celluloid. It's just in the budget that I'll spend "x" amount on picks.

Re: I hate it when picks wear out!!!!!

I don't know about those ultexes being indestructable... Sure, they're pretty sturdy, but they DO wear down. And when they do, they leave a thick, awkward, stubby edge. I prefer the way Tortexes wear down, because at least there's still a nice, thin edge on it.

What/Which picks are the best for shredding???

Speaking of picks that are approximately 3mm,
like the Dunlop Jazz III Stubby...

I have found, when making similar picks...
that the bevel greatly affects it.

A rounded bevel seems to roll over the strings,
allowing for the most speed.

A pick that is beveled so that it has a flatter, thinner edge,
allows for more nuance.
You can pluck the string in a number of different ways.
It allows for more subtlety and feel, whether picking
hard, or soft.

Re: I hate it when picks wear out!!!!!

thoose surf picks are great i recomend them for anyone even if its not their main pick its nice to have for certain things. i actually use the bass pick that they make for playing blues on my strat because you can dig in so much. i also like the jazz pick for more shredding and lighter touch stuff. the hole in the middle gives it a little more flex in your hand when gripped loosely. another plus side to these picks is that you will rarely lose them because they cost 10 or more bucks a piece you tend to keep a pretty close eye on them. i havent lost one yet but my friend did lose one i lent to him.

Hi, "that guy" here. Just sharing my experience, in that ALL picks wear down if you use them enough. I thought that the ultex wouldn't wear, but then I used them in a 2 hour gig and surely enough, they did. It was the same for rehearsals and every other gig after that. Again, my playing style involves a lot of picking and strumming, so I probably wear picks down more than others.

I'm not saying that the ultex is a bad pick by any means. They have a great feel and have a stiffer material which gives a pretty solid sound IMO. If they don't wear out for you and your playing style, that's great, more power to you. Picks are a very personal thing and they are a little different to everyone, so please don't assume that I'm full of it just because my experience was a little different from yours.
