I hate Load In / Load Out of Amps and stuff

Re: I hate Load In / Load Out of Amps and stuff

sum total of this thread so far:

OP is a huge wuss.

:)

Re: I hate Load In / Load Out of Amps and stuff

My rig is compact enough all it takes usually one trip to get everything. All I ever bring at the most is my 1x12 Combo, one guitar in a Hard shell case, and maybe my lap top bag and tool bag and thats it. I installed casters on my combo so now I just roll it instead of being forced to carry it. Only part I loathe is when I have to put it back into my house because it always seems like my amp gets heavier after I play but is light before hand.

Re: I hate Load In / Load Out of Amps and stuff

That's why the guys who can afford it pay for someone else to do it.

It sucks, but it's part of the job. And once you get good at it, it doesn't take long.

Re: I hate Load In / Load Out of Amps and stuff

I don't mind the actual carting of the crap so much. What I do mind is that bull**** some clubs pull where they make everyone load in at once four or five hours early. So you have to get off of work early for an 11 o'clock gig. WTF? Then you stand around and do nothing for hours with nobody in the joint and terrible music blaring through their speakers...or you have to leave your gear unattended while you go eat (or whatever else). And they say they do all this to give you a sound check...but the sound is still ****ty when you play.

I hate this with a passion. We had a gig last month that made us show up at 3:00 to do a load-in and sound check. When we got there, they were doing a live radio interview with Jeff Austin from Yonder Mountain String Band (they were playing across town that night), so we couldn't sound check. On top of that we were told we shouldn't load our gear in because they were having two other bands play that night and didn't want people tripping over stuff in the green room. I told the owner I wasn't leaving $12,000 worth of gear (fiddles are expensive) in my car for the next 5 hours, so we unloaded anyway. Then he told us to come back at 8 to sound check. Guess when we sound checked.... 9:30. I took work off, my g/f took work off and it was a huge cluster****. We are having our album release party there in a few weeks, and I'm going to say no to an early sound check.

pffft. texas. you got it easy OP.

if you're grumbling about gigging in texas, you'd probably kill yourself if you had to gig in Canada during fall/winter/spring.

What are you talking about, carting gear through 2-3 foot snow drifts is fun! I live in Montana, so the only seasons we see are almost winter, winter, still winter and road construction. We have another outdoor gig on the 4th, and I'm prepared for 70+ temps or below 30 temps. I love Montana.

Re: I hate Load In / Load Out of Amps and stuff

Claiming that an inexpensive, lightweight, simplistic amp is for pansies can suggest only elitism or inscurity of manhood. Lol

Says the guy with a gun as his avatar...

Sorry getting off topic. I don't seem to have the 'load in at 3, soundcheck at 930' problem here...maybe we just figured it out? :33: I'm used to load in around 6-7 and having doors pushed 30min due to all the bands showing up a tad late due to work/ a few predrinks at the jamspace. Ahhh load in isn't really that bad if you do it right

we all have our hobbies. it's no different from having a car or a dog as an avatar.... but we all know the popular opinion on this forum regarding that subject.... which is the main motivator for having that avatar in the first place.

believe it or not, i've never been a far-rightist, and i've changed a lot of my views on gun control in general over the past 9 months or so.

Thats funny coming out of you... It really is. More a comment about the guys that are worried about chipping a nail than hauling an amp.

ok i can see how i've been perceived as an elitist at times... with my past anti-EMG rants... but these days, i just say "to each his own" and play my sub-$500 guitars and amps. i'm not against buying cheaper gear if it sounds good.

Your not picking up what im putting down its nothing about the cost or perceived cost of any of the gear. My comment was aimed at those who dont like to get their hands dirty... you seem to be one of those that dont mind getting your hands dirty exactly not the person I was speaking about. If you choose a lunch box cause you like the tone or the light weight or that it goes with your favorite marital aid thats cool my comment was that the amps are aimed at guys who dont like to do hard psyical work... You copy?

i see what you're saying now, but the comment could have been initially elaborated a bit. i gladly lug around a heavy ass 4x10 classic 50 if it means getting the sweet ass toanz!!!

BUT i must respectfully disagree and say that "lunchbox" amps simply a cheaper, simpler option to getting good tone. the size of the amps are a side-effect of their simplicity.

There is only one place around here (that I know of) that really has that problem. Most other places we play we just show up between 8:30-9:30 depending on what time we are playing. Usually things go very smoothly, even when we are setting up our own PA (which we don't have to do too often). Load ins I don't mind so much. It's the load out that I don't like as much, especially in bars where they are pushing you out the door. I've been locked out of places before and had a hard time getting back in to get the last of my stuff. Then the getting it all from my car to the apartment sucks as well, especially since all I want to do by 2:30 or 3:00 AM is go to sleep, doubly when I have work in the morning.

In the end though, it's all worth it cause I get to get paid (minimally) to do what I love to do best of all.

same. the most popular place to play in victoria(downtown bar and grill) has the stage, literally, right next to the street with a door. so you avoid the crowds completely.

Re: I hate Load In / Load Out of Amps and stuff

After gigging a long time with a Hammond B3/Leslie 147 player, and having to help him lug that beast around with a piano dolly.......I'm done dealing with a key player who lugs one of those around.

As for guitar gear.....a 3 channel Bogner does everything a multi amp rig will do, so a head and 212 cab isn't bad.

I'm also a believer in owning a vehicle that's perfectly suited to hauling gear. A pickup with tonneau cover works the best for me. The gear stays hidden if I have to walk away from my vehicle. With the parking situation in Los Angeles/Hollywood, it's common to have to park far from a club's door.
