I have a 3 humbucker guitar and need help

even if you cover the dimebucker it is still a passive pick-up, and the EMG's are active pick-ups, the passive and active pick-ups can't work together and share the same volume knob, because actives and passives use different volume pot resistance levels.

Rock On

I don't mean to beat a dead horse here, but keep in mind, this is only a problem if you want to have both on at the same time. Since he'll only have one pickup on at a time, the problem is easily resolved, with a simple resistor on the 3-way.

(I'll show how when I post the diagram tomorrow.) ;)

Re: I have a 3 humbucker guitar and need help

i think ive decided not to get the Passives....I cant find any soundclip and oging by what people say on here they suck, i just thought theyd be cool cuz Laiho uses them and hes great. They also seems like a slight problem too...so im gunna do the 89 i belive.

Artie! Don't forget that he's got a Les Paul which uses a 3 way toggle switch and not a blade.

My suggestion would be to use from neck to bridge: 85/60/81. That way you have the Zakk set which is totally metal and the 60 to clean things up a bit if you want.

Also, consider individual Volumes with one common tone. I can't see how 3 tones would be usefull, as I never use it for anything other than tuning...

Just my 3 cents!

Dang . . . you're right. I didn't even think of that . . . which blows my wiring idea right out of the water. :smack:

So how does a 3-pup LP switch work?

Soooo....does that mean its not possible?

You can do it, but you need to fit an "Alco-style" 3-way in the place of the LP 3-way. Cosmetically, its the same on top, so it won't hurt the guitars styling. It should fit.

To see what I'm talking about, download, and view, this document:

APEM 12000 series switches

You want part no# 12144, or something similar. I'll search my normal guitar parts sources and see if I can find one.

Artie

Edit: You'll need to scroll down that document until you get to the 12000 series section - about half-way down.

Yup. That should do it. I'll post the wiring diagram as soon as I get home from work. (About 5 hours.) It's a bit hard to describe.

Edit: Keep in mind that thats a mini-switch. Neither the handle or the mounting hole will be the same. Electrically it will work, however.

So does this mean i need to find one thats a full switch or else its going to look funny/have problems installing it?

Unfortunately, yes. Both of the Peavey's in my sig came with the exact switch that you need, but even they don't supply it anymore. I'll check Mouser and a couple other electronic supply places, and see if I can find a source for the one you want.

Re: I have a 3 humbucker guitar and need help

ok....i think i may have found what i need...but not really. I found a 3-Pickup Right-angle Switch, but its a right angle and wont fit. Do you think the switch that came with my guitar may work?

If its an LP-style, no. You need the specific electrical configuration of the Alco-style 3-way to switch 3 pups individually.

bah, then im completely lost as to what to do.

Don't give up. :)

The switch you need is manufactured. Its just a matter of finding a supplier.

Re: I have a 3 humbucker guitar and need help

the EMG 81b/89m/60n is my favorite combo by far. It's very versetaille and can cover about any style. if you get the 89 you will have to keep it in the same spot since it's connector is different than the other two(more conductors) but it sounds good in the middle and the 89 has the advantage of being splitable.

Re: I have a 3 humbucker guitar and need help

Do you think if i went down to the local guitar store they'd have it or be able to order it in or something?

Its a long shot, but you could try. Just don't let them sell you the wrong thing. It must be a DPDT on-on-on switch. You want the standard size handle.

Be prepared for them to tell you that you can't select three pups with a 3-way switch. They're wrong. ;)

Film at eleven. (3-ish, actually.)

Re: I have a 3 humbucker guitar and need help

Alright sweet. I found

Description: Switches; Switch Type: Toggle Switch; Switch Function: DPST; Switch Circuit: On-On-On; Current Rating: 15A; Features: Locking Actuator

But it says DPST which means its no good right?

Re: I have a 3 humbucker guitar and need help

Right . . . er, wrong . . . er right. Its the wrong switch. :)

DPST is bad, 15A is bad, and the "locking actuator" is real bad. Thats a handle that you have to pull up to switch.

Also, I don't think that description can be correct. You can't have DPST and be on-on-on at the same time.

The ideal switch is the APEM 12144. But you want the one that doesn't have any letters afterward. And, you don't want the x778 version.

I'm trying to find the Alco part number also.

Re: I have a 3 humbucker guitar and need help

If you can hold off for another three hours, I'll post a diagram that will make the whole thing more clear. ;)
