I have a problem...

I really love Les Pauls, Customs especially. Problem is, I seem to have this mental block about paying big money for a Gibson. Yet I'm much more comfortable with the idea of even paying >$1000 for a Fender/G&L guitar. Maybe I have some sort of subconscious objection to Gibson's business practices, or even a complex about my playing ability not being equal to the 'nice' factor of an LP.

Re: I have a problem...

Get an Epi...problem solved :D

Ok, if an Epi LP custom won't fit the bill, keep an eye out for some deals on used LP customs. I've heard those Edwards LP's are a good bang for the buck too if you're looking for another alternative. Good luck with the GAS.

Re: I have a problem...

Oh I've been looking plenty at the Orville LP Customs lately, but even those for some reason there's a hesitation on the bid button.

Re: I have a problem...

Yeah, see if you can find a lawsuit era Tokai LP custom copy. Great great guitars. Or as a bit of an alternative, the 1980s Ibanez Artists are nice. Or a Yamaha SG.

Re: I have a problem...

i just saw a nice all original mint 78 Custom, white but the finnish had yellowed greatly. It was basicly a NOS shape besides the yellowing. A real treat for the Randy Rhoads fan in me... anyways as much as i loved it the price was not for me... I'm a janitor for a living... last night i was jamming with an axe that cost me $250 and an Amp that set me back less then $400... It's just not in the game plan in the near future to buy a real expensive Gibson... And the 78 Custom i saw was cheap... $1800 Canadian.... someone got a deal...

But even if i had the money i'd have to think really hard if i wanted to spend that type of cash on an axe...

Re: I have a problem...

I got lucky and managed to score a Black Custom a few years back on ebay. I got it for $1400 shipped. Excellent condition and only a couple years old.

Patience is a virtue.

Epiphone is even worse... I'd rather overpay for an American made guitar than overpay for a Chinese made guitar.

What! Dude, that's a steal! :bigok:

Don't get me wrong, you get what you pay for. There are some decent Epiphones out there, you just got to do some looking. :)

Oh, I second that, it wasn't a couple of weeks ago that I heard a sunburst Epi. at a friends shop.

The guy first played a Gibson LP and then picked that up. If I didnt' know I'd thought that the epiphone cost twice that gibson.
That's how good it soudned (or/and how crappy the Gibson sounded...)

Now that Epi as well as another white one that was sitting right next to it (also sounded pretty good, albeit not as good) are long gone while that Gibson still sits there...

When it comes (especially) to Gibsons it appears that luck is everything...

I've owned three Epiphones. They can be good guitars, but I'd still rather support the American economy instead of the Chinese economy if it's a choice between the two.

If the Gibson sounded bad, did it have open coil pickups? If so, then it would have been those crappy high output ceramic pickups they stick in the les paul classics. I don't like them.

Re: I have a problem...

Not sure but I think no, I think they were covered.

Before playing them he first tested them both unplugged, no comparison.

The Epiphone resonated much better, gave a fuller, sweeter tone with a hell of a lot more sustain. Then he plugged it... No comment.

I'm not saying that all Epiphones are great or that all Gibsons suck but as long as there's an Epiphone that sounds better than a Gibson that costs 3 times what the epiphone does then there's something terribly wrong...

I'm all for supporting one's own economy but only as long as the goods are worth the price tag (both in quality of materials and workmanship), otherwise you're just paying for the name. Not cool...

So don't get a Gibson, get a Godin. :-D

Re: I have a problem...

Upon further review, I seem to have missed a sentence in my first post: Dollar for dollar, I think I feel much more comfortable paying for a Fender than I do a Gibson. Why? I don't know.

Re: I have a problem...

I think Tokais are supposed to be good, too.

80's Japanese Tokais are the bees knees interms of quality and attention to historic detail - my other half has an 84 strat in firemist gold and its a beauty. Yamaha SG's of the same period were the LP killer, Santana played one before he switched to the PRS dark side.

Modern Japanese Tokai Love Rocks are supposed to be good check out the www.tokaiforum.com the low down. Modern Yamahas are also supposed to be very good http://www.vintageguitar.com/brands/details.asp?ID=184

I like the look of Hamers but have yet to play one

Technically nothing is overpriced if you can get back what you paid for it.

Hate them for what they are sure but the fact of the matter is that in the used market they can usually be turned around quickly and easily for what you paid for them.

...unless you're an idiot and bought new or overpaid for a used one.

It's because Fender guitars rock!

I feel the same way to be honest. Lucky for me, I only play Fender guitars. It's not a stand I'm making or anything, I just can't hold on to any Fender for more than a couple months before growing not to like it.

My advice is, if you find one you like (a Gibson I mean), and it plays and feels and sounds nice, go for it. Pretend it isn't a Gibson, just another guitar. If you have it on your lap and you think 'yeah, this is worth X amount of dollars', then go for it.

Re: I have a problem...

The Gibson-bashers will try to steer you away but just get a real Custom -- a black one. You know nothing less will do. Just don't buy it without playing it first, and you'll completely avoid the issue of getting the occasional dog that the occasional Epi will beat.

Which is a problem the Gibson-bashers won't tell you about -- all big guitar makers -- PRS, Fender, Hamer, Ibanez, you name it -- sometimes put out dogs in their high end lines and wonder-axes in their cheapo line. But it's rare, and again easily avoided by playing the guitar before plunking down the cash.

Re: I have a problem...

I could never shell out $3000 for a guitar.

So, I went with what I felt was a close alternative.
