For many years I have looked at the guitars but never really connected with one and thought that they were way overpriced. In November I bought one for an unreal price in a Pawn Shop purely to flip and make some $$ on it. However when I took it out to a band practice after I had cleaned and set it up it floored me and now I know what the fuss is all about. It's not the best playing guitar I own and by far not the most attractive guitar I own but has now become the only guitar I am playing on stage.
The reason is the way this guitar responds in a real world band setting and the number of tones I can get without swapping guitars. Both aspects are simply amazing.
I own a stock 2007 Custom 24 with the HFS/VB pickups and the 5 way rotary switch.
With just my volume control and the 5 way using a hot high gain expressive tube amp and almost no effects the number of tones I can cover is astounding.
Screaming metal, fluid solos, strat like bell tones, bluesy smooth sweet tones I can pull them all with this guitar using the 5 way the guitar volume and touch and never touching my amp or my effects.
Nothing else I have ever owned would let me do this NOTHING!!
Bottom line if you want the ultimate stage guitar to cover a boatload of different tones on the fly check a real Custom 24 out and spend a little time seeing what these guitars will really do.
Here are clips of 2 songs from our last Church service on Sunday. I am running the custom 24 through a Jet City JCA22H head set up hot with the gains on both sides at around 6 or so. The only effects are a Dan Echo Delay a Boss chorus which are run through the loop on the head and a Wah set between the guitar and the amp and that's it!
