EL84 tubes never had THAT thing to me, too. As a player, for sure.
I'm too much of an EL34 guy myself I guess. All my influences used that and I used it for too long to think outside of it.
As a recording producer I respect them more than as a player. I mean, I really enjoy having other people (socialised into them) playing that than having an EL84 amp in my hands. It is a strange phenomenon as it is the same in the case of Mesa Rectos. Man I hate playing them! But I love to assemble a mixdown session based on a good Mesa Recto player.
