I Have To Rave About Bogner + NAD

First of all, I have to give a lot of credit to Bogner for their great customer service and quick build time. I ordered a custom amp near the end of last week and it shipped yesterday. The build time was initially estimated to be about 4 weeks, but those guys cranked away and had it out in no time. I must have called Bogner a dozen time with all kinds of questions before and during the build, and they were extremely helpful every time. I've always been a fan of Bogner amps, but now I'm a real fan of Bogner. There's no doubt that I'll be a return customer.

So about my NAD... I think that I posted a thread some time back, maybe a year ago or so, and vowed to save the money for a Bogner Shiva 20th Anniversary - with reverb. Well, I saved and saved and my dream finally came true. This one is even better (hopefully) because I ordered it with EL34's instead of KT88's. It's not the stock model, but Bogner is cool enough to put whatever tubes you want, even 6550's if you want.

I elected to go with EL34's because they have more of an overal midrange and not as much emphasis on the high mids and thick bass. KT88's are wide open and has such great separation that it sounds almost magical to play. I'm not entirely sure if EL34's will cause me to lose some of the blossom and detail that I could enjoy with KT88's, but it's apparently only the minor addition of a piggyback resistor that allows the bias to be set for KT88's. Even though I'm very familiar with the KT88 model and have a ton of experience with EL34's in general, I'm not certain what qualities are mostly inherent in the amp or the KT88 tubes.

I'm thinking that the amp has the overall character, definition and dimension and that the EL34's will basically cause an EQ shift, spongier attack, and a bit of haziness in the mids and treble. I'm not sure how much bigness of the KT88's, if any, will be lost.

Although the KT88 version always sounded just fine to me, I wanted to reduce the bass just a little bit and add more natural mids. Don't get me wrong because I never thought the KT88's were too bassy. Frankly, I'm not sure why some people hate them so much because I think they're fantastic. It's great to have the option of switching to those tube types and only requiring a minor resistor change and re-bias.

Another great thing about it is that Bogner uses Winged-C's and Shuguang preamp tubes so there's no compromise on quality anywhere in the amp. If there is a single thing that I regret is that the wheat grill cloth is no longer available. I would have preferred the old style tolex and wheat grill cloth to the new cosmic tolex and salt/pepper grill cloth. Still, I think the new look is also very cool so no complaints here.

Now is the hardest part - waiting for the shipment to arrive. Looks like it won't be until next Tuesday... dang!

The Bogner sound was built around the EL-34 sound, so I have no doubt you made the right choice. It's not as if his EL-84, 6L6, and KT-88 amps aren't good, because they are, but if you're going for Bogner gain, EL-34's have the right character.

Apart from that, I finally got to see and hear the new Bogner Pedals at the LA Amp Show.
They weren't even selling their demo models, because they haven't shipped yet.
When they do, the Uber is $250, and the blue and red XTC pedals will be $300 each.
The blue pedal is the one I'd get, but I'm not sure I need any as I have an XTC.

cool!

95% certain I wouldn't be able to tell the difference in power tubes if blindfolded.

I'm definitely going for the XTC red pedal. Even though I wouldn't want the XTC red as my main lead sound, it would be nice if I could achieve a similar sound and feel with the pedal and my Shiva clean channel. I guess we'll see. I recommend King Guitar if you want to order Bogner stuff, and I say that with absolutely no affiliation with them. He just does an outstanding job every time I deal with him and he's very fair and willing to work with customers. Sorry about the plug-in, but that's been my experience.

Well I'm very familiar with the KT88 version, so I think I will be able to tell, but let me just say that I hope you are as close to being right as you can be. There will definitely be an EQ difference, that I know from past experience swapping tube types. However, what I'm not sure about is whether EL34's will have the same detail and depth. I'm guessing that EL34's will be a bit "smoky" as I like to put it, or "hazy" as I've heard them described before, and I think the treble will be a little softer because KT88's kind of have a harder sounding treble.

I don't really feel the stiffness other people describe with KT88's, but I do think they have a really immediate and slightly forgiving response. I guess it will be clear in a few more days.

Thanks. It is pretty cool. I called a few amp makers and asked if there were a couple of minor tweaks they could make on certain amps but they were unwilling to do it. Bogner doesn't do custom work either, but they were a little bit more flexible as far as tubes and bias were concerned.

I contacted Splawn first actually because I was interested in an Nitro with EL34's, but I had one before that didn't really have a responsive mid and treble controls. All I asked was if they could make the mid and treble control a touch more responsive but they were unwilling to make the change. I also asked if I could at least get them to install 6550's instead of KT88's (even if I sent them the tubes), but they wouldn't budge, so I looked elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, I love Splawn amps and think they're a good and honest company, but I couldn't get exactly what I wanted from them. I don't want that to seem like a jab at them because it's not. I just wanted a bit more for my money.

In any case, Bogner has so many cool amps that I'm dying to own so I'm going to just stick with them and Mesa Boogie. Next conquest is a Mesa Boogie Lonestar Classic head and, hopefully, an XTC 101b.

Re: I Have To Rave About Bogner + NAD

I figured most of the larger brands wouldnt do something custom for you like that, but I am surprised that Splawn would not make those changes for you.

Anyways, you got an awesome amp and I think it is pretty cool you were able to get it just the way you wanted. Congrats.

Since when do Shivas have the control on the bottom?
