I have Tried almost Every Dimarzio, Only a Handful of Duncans...

Re: I have Tried almost Every Dimarzio, Only a Handful of Duncans...

Funny, seeing as how it's hard to walk into any music store and not see 3 or 4 cubic yards of Duncans behind the glass counter, it's news to me that Duncan needs to be more competitive.

Re: I have Tried almost Every Dimarzio, Only a Handful of Duncans...

Who's specializing in knockoffs? Duncan? Danged pronouns!
Most certainly not! ;)

There are a few companies thout there that people purchase primarily for the price, not for the qulity or originality, not limited only to pickups... these are the ones I speak of, I don´t feel the need to start writing a list of names as most people know the more popular ones, and the pus do sometimes do cater to a fetish ;)

Eh, DiMarzio's are not generally 60-65... they are about 70-90 just like Duncans. They aren't cheaper, at least not the ones I wouldn't mind trying. And also, I don't think Seymour Duncan requires you to toss guitars into a swamp and call em stolen for an endorsement. Just saying.

Where are you shopping?

Go to musician's friend and search for DiMarzio pickups. There are 5+ pages of pickups for less than $70 (starting at $49).

Do the same with Seymour Duncan and there is 1 page.

^^ MF isn´t shopping, it´s paying an extra premium on just about everything for not having to look around. It`s "buying stuff Lazy-Boy style" IMO.

Seriously, I´ve never seen a non-exclusive item at MF that another dealer doesn´t sell for less.

Re: I have Tried almost Every Dimarzio, Only a Handful of Duncans...

Duncan's are not overpriced. Guitarists are such tight wads! If you played the violin professionally you'd be spending hundreds of $$$ for just a bow! Maybe thousands.

Our gear is so cheap compared to what other musicians have to spend to maintain their instruments.

As for Dimarzios - I've never owned a Dimarzio pickup I loved.

Liked? Sure.

Loved? Never.

There's some companies that voice their products with a voice I love and feel instantly at home with (Duncan, Holmes, Fralin, Roland, PRS, Gibson, Hamer, Fender....) and others who voice their products with a voice I feel less at home with (Dimarzio, Mesa-Boogie, ...). :)

We make up for it in volume.

What??? Using your logic, wouldn't the DiMarzios be cheaper too? Whatever.

But... I'm not a violin player. I don't care what people playing the chello are paying for their instruments. The reason the prices are lower is because there are 500 guitar players for every french horn player.

I gotcha...

Now on this price issue. A Dimarzio PAF is $69.99 on MF. A Duncan 59 is $72.99. You get a pickup ring with the Duncan. Is that what we're arguing over? $3.00?

Ha... I didn't do an analysis... or side by side comparison of similar pups... just pointing out that on average DiMarzio pups are cheaper than Duncan. That's it.

But, to be accurate... the standard black PAF on MF is $64.99 and the Duncan '59 is $72.99. For nickel you are looking at $74 for the DiMarzio versus $90 for the Duncan.

Anyway - this isn't even my thread!

Re: I have Tried almost Every Dimarzio, Only a Handful of Duncans...

I was refering to the Duncans and DiMarzios I was interested in. But whatever. Since DiMarzio are so much cheaper, maybe I should just try one and give it a go-round.

In theory, yes.

In practice where real world variables such as Supply and demand, public opinion, marketing-based pricing schemes and such apply, the story is different.

I gotcha...

Apparently yes... TBH, I don´t understand the argument at all and I have to save up for 2 months to buy ANY aftermarket pickup at present due to unemployment... I can´t imagine anybody in a western country having to scrimp that much more....

Re: I have Tried almost Every Dimarzio, Only a Handful of Duncans...

Duncan and DMZ seem to operate differently. I don't regard one as better...just different. Duncan seems to offer authentic repros based on Gibson and Fender spec, whereas, DMZ seem to offer a customized unit based on the palyers criteria. Both companies fill a niche very nicely, and both make great products.

Most recently I went shopping for a PAF type pickup and bought a pair of VPAF's and found them to be stellar. They cost me $110 shipped.

Another 2 cents down the drain...

Re: I have Tried almost Every Dimarzio, Only a Handful of Duncans...

Even if a DMZ is a few bucks cheaper, you American folks have no reason to complain. Most Duncans and DMZs in Canada start around $90, even at larger stores like Long & McQuade. The Phat Cat I bought new (at a small shop) was $125, and yes it was worth every penny!

Re: I have Tried almost Every Dimarzio, Only a Handful of Duncans...

The answer to the OP is to buy your pickups off the trading forums here. The prices are great even after US to AU conversion, including shipping and comparing to local 2nd hand prices....
