I just busted a high E

..and I been playing for an hour without it. I'm about a 15% better player without the high E! Must be cause i got short stubby paws. Now I knopw what its like to have huge fingers! Day-um! Speaking of which, is there anything a guy with small hands can do better on the fretboard than a guy wiht ladyfingers?

Re: I just busted a high E

I never understood the whole finger length thing. The only thing that longer fingers would help me with is those Hendrix thumb over neck chords. Everything else I can do just fine.

where did you get the 15% from Jer? I would like to see your data, and an explanation of your interpretation and analysis methodology as well as explanations of possible sources of error.

kidding aside, I've never really played for any significant length of time with a broken string. Pretty much soon as it happens, it gets replaced.

I have short fingers and I can get my thumb over all the way to the A-string pretty easily. The only thing I think it really helps with is stretches over 5 frets (which I can't do).

Re: I just busted a high E

One of my collegues misses a finger so he made himself a smaller neck guitar, can play pretty well though. So perhaps to see whether it is the 1 sting less factor or the less width needed factor you need to get yourself a guitar with a smaller than usual neck :D.

Short fingers would stop you from doing this, but other then that your cool.

Re: I just busted a high E

I suppose my fingers are proportional to my hands which I would comparatively small. That in itself doesn't cause a problem, though I could manage that stretch above if you snapped all my fingers off and laid them end to end. What I do find though is that my fingers are quite thin, which means I have to be very accurate with my finger placement on the strings to ensure I fret out properly; I'm very well practiced at the unwanted buzz style of playing.

If you really need to stretch over a wide range, you can try using your thumb, like Jake E. Lee does:
