I know I’m set on pickups right now

I feel like that at the moment right now too, but there's something exciting about trying new pickups out too!

Honestly, my pickup journey could've ended the moment I tried the JB out, LOL. I love that pickup. But the grass is always greener, I suppose. If I had stopped my journey there, I would've never tried the 500T, the Black Winter, the SSH+, and the Antiquity JB, which I probably love as much, so there's that too.

I am in the middle of building a Warmoth, and I have pickups for it that I like, but I am still thinking it deserves a Custom Shop set...

I'm pretty happy with my pickups right now, but yeah, sometimes you do need to try something new.

The grass is often greener, but I think for each guitar in question, I’ve seen enough pastures to know which one has the right shade of each. The moments when I say, “I wish this one sounded more …” or “I wish this one sounded less …” are pretty rare these days, and I’m happy to turn on the amp, tune up, and just play.

Yeah, I haven't been tone-chasing very much in the past few months, because I'm fairly OK with what I have and any time spent fiddling with pickups is time taken away from practicing and playing.

Yeah, I'm not saying you should swap your pickups out just to try the flavor of the month pickups either. But sometimes the flavor of the month pickups happen to kick ass as well. :D

I'm glad you're settled for now, though. I kinda want a new guitar so that I can leave my two Gibsons as is and focus on exploring different sounds in another.

I love trying different pickups in every guitar that I finish. It's not uncommon that when I first plug it in it doesn't sound like I expected,,,in a bad way. Then several months later, after completing a couple more guitars, I'll go back to that bad sounding guitar and I'm surprised at how great it sounds.

I enjoy trying different pickups in various guitars just to hear how they sound. I usually learn something even if it isn't a great match. If I had the money, there are a whole bunch of pickups I'd buy for that reason. For my own purposes as a musician, I like having everything sorted out so I can play and write instead of thinking about gear, but I've developed an abstract interest in pickups in general, apart from my own hunt for tone. I would be interested in winding, too.

As far as getting my guitars squared away, I'm almost there. I have a couple guitar/pickup pairings that don't sit quite right with me when I play them. I have a set incoming that will hopefully solve one of my problems. Fingers crossed.

I did a lot of tone chasing 15-20 years ago, and that resulted in most of my guitars finding their forever pickups. The only ones that aren't dialed all the way in are relatively new additions and I've convinced myself I'm still feeling out the pickups.

I chased a lot during these last 20 years and I'm quite set on what I like. i try a lot, though, because that's my job but I like very little. I have a set made by Lundgren that I 'm itching to try. Double cream, by the way, just to piss off Larry. Ironically, I'm super into Dimarzio lately. The Illuminator set and the EVO set are my favorites.

That's a great way to define it - Each of these guitars excite me, because of the way they sound.

I like it!

Yes, I agree. It's a great frame for thinking about pickups.

Whether it's the mid-focused tightness of the Black Winter, or the snarl of the Nazgul, or the articulation of the Full Shred, or the sizzle of the Pearly Gates, or the organic rock of the JB, I'm always excited by the sound of the guitar each one is in. Of course, I go through periods of favouring one over the other, but that's usually based on what I'm playing at any given time.
