I like the Custom Custom, BUT

It is not ok to compare the DC resistance figures of Customs (apples=wound with #43 AWG wires) and PAFs (bananas=wound with #42 AWG wires). If it's a 10K PAF you want, check out those S-Deco's from the CS in case you haven't done so.

Good luck.

Dr.
What is an S-Deco from the CS!?

True. Take two pickups wound to exactly 10k with the exact same wind pattern, one with #42 wire (thicker) and the other with #43 wire (thinner), and the one with #43 wire will sound thinner and brighter.

This is because the size of the coil will be smaller (more narrow) with #43 wire so it won't be able to pick up the longer wavelengths of low-mid and bass freq's.

The coil capacitance will be different too, which will also affect the tone, but I can't say how.

That is why my Burstbucker Pros sound as big as many 12-15k pickups I have tested.

Re: I like the Custom Custom, BUT

so, is the custom custom super smooth and round, articulate and nice? I'm into the sounds of Allan Holdsworth, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson (but a fatter sound), EVH's 1984 sound and the likes.... really round, smooth sounds.

I just got a used Ibanez Prestige s2020x (22 frets, mahogany body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard), and I'm thinking of trying the CC for the bridge (TB-11?), what for the neck?.... Alnico II Pro? Does it split well? '59? Any other? Thanks!

I should add: I'm a gear illiterate...

Look no further. CC/A2Pro sounds great in a mahogany guitar, and those Prestige's are really nice too.

Re: I like the Custom Custom, BUT

Ok-seriously:
I love the CC - no bass probs at all with an Epi Paul. That seems to be consensus. I like to use the word "corpulent" to describe the highs of the CC. It's both Fat in the high end, yet can crunch without booming in the low end. Which is nice in aBoomy/bassy Paul. Gte's fat without being shrill in all the right places!

MESA -Consensus is no bass probs there either. Can't say personally. Wish I had that problem (perhaps a line 6 compromise)

And never forget: A pup can't ADD anything that isn't already there. So the pup is giving you allthe nids that can be found in that Paul. And, since it's an Epiphone and the wood is speculative for quality and type, it may be mid heavy or bass light, or both compared to a real Paul.

I'd say it's either just your ears and taste, or perhaps a bad magnet swap. But it sounds like the C5 would make your day without all of the surgery.

And I love a PG neck with the CC! And Zhangliqun, if I'm ever famous I'm seeing if you are available to be my tech, dude!

Re: I like the Custom Custom, BUT

I hear some say a dark guitar works well using the C-5, while some say the mids of the CC help cut in a dark guitar that may also have a thin body lacking mids. Then Duncan says on the description that the CC has aggressive highs yet it is good for bright guitars? I would think the last thing you would want for a bright guitar is aggressive highs.

They are smooth highs, very rounded off. Trust me. I have two, one in a maple bodied Kramer and it's anything but bright. It just means they cut through but they're not harsh or "ice picky".

Re: I like the Custom Custom, BUT

can the CC be considered "OPEN" sounding?
you know like a old paf?
i had a duncan custom but never got around to swapping the magnet to a II
the ceramic was not very open paf like to me even though many say it is?

Somewhat, but there is some compression going on. It's not as open as a 59 or Seth though if that's where your going. Since it's hotter than both of those, it's going to compress more.

Re: I like the Custom Custom, BUT

Glad to be of assistance. I have some other great stuff like "That sucks" and "Go for it." Anytime- really. And be sure to check my more serious reply a couple of posts later...

Really, though, CC bridge and PG neck is an awesome combo. Particularly if you play both pups on sometimes. There is a world of amazing tones with that combo - lots of subtleshading is possible w/ volume & tone adjusts. I just think the two make a really full eq - they cover each others strengths/weaknesses. By combining and bringing one up or down you get some amazing sounds....even from the Epiphone! Really flexible. I like the PG w/the CC just because it's a little hotter and the mid pump there is in upper mid vs the lower mid push on the CC in the bridge.

OK, thanks. How does the A2Pro sound when split? I think I might be using that sound a lot, clean and slightly overdriven.

Dunno. I've never split an A2Pro. I usually don't like to split humbuckers. If I want a single coil sound, I use single coils. I just like my humbuckers to be on full bore and use the volume knob to adjust things.

Its definately not as open sounding as a lower output pup, like Erik said there is some compression but not a ton like you would get with a very high output pup.

Re: I like the Custom Custom, BUT

the sound clips and descriptions of the forum members made me realize id a hated a rio BBQ in a les paul,or the bass heavy dimarzio air zone.
dont take me wrong love the invader, anderson h3 and the ones above, just not in my bassy Les paul.
THE CC IT IS
too much mids and bass in a pickup + bass heavy guitar=muddy tone.
seems like a formula

ps.:last when i was in los angeles,i played a GMP guitar with cc and 59 thew a knew boogie amp.mesa lonestrar and it was too mid heavy, and not bassy at all.
the guitar player from dreamtheater plays a dimarzio with scooped mids to mate well with his boogie gear.
maybe mid boosted pickups dont go weel with already mid emphased amps such as a boogie.
id scoop the boogies mids and take away some of that BASS.
wonder how the cc´s gonna sound in my LP threw my peavey classic 50 4x10.

So let me ask....I have been gaining a lot of interest back in Duncans recently so if I had to fill a Les Paul Standard, PRS Mccarty and PRS CE...which would be the safe bets in these guitars considering the JB, CC, Cusotm, and C5?

12k maybe, but at 15k, even a #43 wire coil should be pretty wide, so I don't know if that's it.

My stock response:

SPIN-A-SPLIT!...SPIN-A-SPLIT!...SPIN-A-SPLIT!...SPIN-A-SPLIT!...SPIN-A-SPLIT!...SPIN-A-SPLIT!...
