well....I picked up a melody maker probably about 4 years ago, and I never touched the darn thing...the pickups were just terrible, but the neck was awesome...so I finally worked up the courage to "mess" with a Vintage Instrument.....figuring that if I'm not gonna sell it I might as well make it playable

well here she is, threw a couple of SD P-90's in her( Model 1N,1B anyone know what model that is?...i can't find it on the site but thats what the sticker says on the bottom)

and a POOR Repro Pickgaurd that I cut out of Plexi Glass:D...Until I can shell out for a custom job she'll do for now..and Might I say I think the "see-thru" aspect is pretty killer IMO.

well enough chit chat....On To The PICS!!!!

Very cool. I don't see old melody Makers getting huge prices 10 years from now...but who knows? At least it is a usable great sounding instrument...NOW!! looks good!

dunno about future value, but it sure looks fuggin awesome. I bet it sounds even better

Re: I may regret this in 10+ years(Melody Maker Content)

what's up with the lower part of the warparound bridge? it's not on the studs

Re: I may regret this in 10+ years(Melody Maker Content)

It stays as it is or I'm impaling you with it. Unless you want to sell it to me of course :D

I love it.

Re: I may regret this in 10+ years(Melody Maker Content)

Ya know what, that's really cool. An idea for the pickguard is to eliminate the surrounds around the pickups and just do the bottom half to cover the channel and control cavity. Maybe a matte black but the clear plexi glass is cool too. Or make it go all the way across the top and filled in under the strings like a Tele or Strat.

Re: I may regret this in 10+ years(Melody Maker Content)

Awesome i like the plexi glass look

Re: I may regret this in 10+ years(Melody Maker Content)

That's all right!

I like Hot Rails in the bridge of an MM.

yea I thought about not "surrounding" the pickups as well...but then the screws would just be there looking ugly...so I decided to cover them up...PLus cover the "less than perfect" routs for the P-90's they arn't straight...a lil wobbly:)

and for all who care she's a 1962 Melody maker:D

anyone on te Pickup models? I'm curious as to what models of SD's they are.

Sorry to pee in your Cheerios...

Sorry to pee in your Cheerios...

You're going to regret it. Big time.

If there was nothing else wrong with the guitar, there were so many other options other than routing it.

Regardless of it being a Melody Maker, it's still a pre 1965 Gibson- and it looks like it was in good shape, heck, it looks like it was in great shape. 15 years ago 50s Les Paul Jrs were $500 guitars. I had a really clean 60 that I paid WAY too much for at $900. Look where those prices are.

The way the "vintage" market has been going, stuff that's undesirable old stuff becomes "vintage" as all the "vintage" stuff gets scooped up and hoarded.

I think you made a stupid mistake. I don't think it'll be 10 years before you realize how stupid of a mistake it was.

Re: I may regret this in 10+ years(Melody Maker Content)

I had one of those--it was my first "decent"guitar after I wore out the brass frets on the Kay I started on ( that was a great way to talk your parents into a new guitar--the frets are worn out--what could they say?) too bad there weren't after market pickups in 1970, because P-90's on a MM are sweet. They also seem to end up with big LP jr. necks instead of the skinny necks most post '65 SG's have, so I wouldn't feel too bad about making the mods, someone who actually PLAYS would know that was a good thing to do. Meaning you've just saved the guitar from spending ALL it's time behind a lot of Plexiglas.

I deffinatly did, she's been sitting for almost 4 years...with Virtually NO playtime, although she has the Nicest Chunkiest neck I've ever played...wich just made perfect sence to make it an "LP JR." great rawk tones comes out of this Bad Boy Now!!

hey I play, not collect so Poo on that haha!

Re: I may regret this in 10+ years(Melody Maker Content)

thats the whole point. If you know in your head your not going to sell it, why sho7uld you keep it in good condition, or stock, or ANYTHING that you feel you don't like about the guitar.

If you wanted to show it to some collector in 5 years or so and value it for you, yeah keep it in its case and don't touch it, but i tihnk its much better ti play guitars you like then sell them and let someone miss out of 5 years playing time on a good guitar.

Re: I may regret this in 10+ years(Melody Maker Content)

Nothing too irreversible and she looks good (and I'm sure sounds better). I'd say more power to you my friend.

Re: I may regret this in 10+ years(Melody Maker Content)

If you get famous they will call that the Mitch Signature Melody Maker

Otherwise, you'll have a hacked vintage Gibson

Re: I may regret this in 10+ years(Melody Maker Content)

Honestly I can't understand the whole "vintage" mentality.

I mean, did I miss sth or aren't we buying (some even collecting) guitars to enjoy them?
If so what the heck is wrong with making a guitar you otherwise like but not in its' entirety just perfect for you?

If one want to make an investment in sth I'm pretty sure there are far better things to invest in than guitars.

Man, you had it for four years so I'm pretty sure it wasn't a rash decision.
If you like it, and from what you say it's pretty obvious you do, then I say who gives a d@mn, just play in good health and enjoy!!!
