I might become an LP kinda guy.

Just a brief history of this guitar: (Epiphone Les Paul Custom)

A customer brought it to my luthier friend. Neck was broken in seven places. Guitar was beat. My friend advised him that the repair would exceed what the guitar cost new. Customer said do it. He was wary of the guy being able to pay for that extensive of repair. He was right. Customer never showed up to pick it up.

Several years later, he asks me if I'd like it. (He did the basic neck repair, but nothing else.) I say "yes". That was a couple years ago.

A couple weeks ago, he asks me what I've done to the guitar. I say "nothing", except install some Duncan pups. We trade favors all the time. He takes it back, and does all the final work, and a setup . . . for free.

I can't believe how sweet this thing plays and sounds. It may have instantly become my favorite axe. And I'm not an LP kinda guy.
The pups are Blues Saraceno PATB-3b and PATB-1n. Killer clean sound. (Sorry about my photographic skills.)

Oh, and he installed a bone nut.

I'll try to take pics of the back of the neck. You can't tell it was ever broke.

P.S. I guess I can take my own post off topic . . . if you haven't tried the PATB series of pups, you need to. Suweeet!

If you ever take a vacation to Disney, look me up. I'll let you bang on her all day. ;)

Re: I might become an LP kinda guy.

I've been an LP guy since the first day I bought a guitar. I love them, I love all kinds of guitars but LP's are special to me.

That's a nice lookin' LP ArtieToo!

Re: I might become an LP kinda guy.

If that 'thing' is making you think about Les Pauls, why don't you play a real genuine unmodified Gibson Les Paul Standard - the difference will be night and day and that'll blow your mind. I wouldnt even touch whatever it is that you are talking about.

Nostalgina is a great factor! The first electric I held and played (coming from classic guitar) was an LP-shaped clone back in 1983, don't even know the brand. But my first electric was an Aria strat. Never managed to move away from the strats ever since.

Re: I might become an LP kinda guy.

I've always been kinda interested in the Blues PATB and PATB1-n combo. The clips I've heard them in are quite nice.

I've wanted to give those a try–Oz Fox uses those and they sound phenomenal!

They're almost "hi-fi". As in, very even frequency response. Not too much, or too little of anything. Run through a good EQ and you can make them anything you want. Great note articulation.

Hmmm, I wonder how they would sound through Walnut...just in case the pickups don't do well in my project...I am open minded.

Back on topic, I absolutely loved the tone of my two Gibson LP Studios but didn't care for the neck...go back and forth on getting another one. Thought about getting a nice Epi and upgrading the pickups & electronics. Glad you are enjoying this one!

Re: I might become an LP kinda guy.

Don't do it. Too many have succumbed to the external charms of the Les Paul; only to wind up in misery because of its outdated practicalities.

Some have even claimed to grow tired of the really, really, really heavy albatross around their necks.

:naughty:

Re: I might become an LP kinda guy.

Those are excellent Epi's... If they every made a LP Custom like their 50's neck profile Pro's (no longer in production), I'd be all over them!

Gibson offers chambered weight relief bodies, those must be cool! Other modern single cut guitars (like the ones Ibanez make), are excellent in most aspects : weight, playability, tone, etc... My Ibby ARZ800 (fantastic tone, playability, weight, etc) weighs less than my strat. Never fell in love with the ergonomy, the weight imbalance is still there, but it is a decent guitar otherwise.

Ah, you gotta love gear snobs.

Nice looking Epi LPC, makes me sorry I sold my LPC Pro....being beat up has a certain kind of appeal to me!

Kinda like a dirty woman I guess!

I'll grant you that. It's easily the heaviest guitar I have.

Btw, did I mention I'm trying out some D'Addarios with a wound G-string.

Once I put on an LP, I never notice the weight after that. They feel and sound so good, when I play a whole gig with LP's, the weight never crosses my mind.
