I need a cheapish SS practise amp.

Re: I need a cheapish SS practise amp.

Lead 12s are expensive aren't they?

Tenniso... yeah I'll try the Vox beside the Cube for sure. I always had a feeling the Vox would turn out to be a good amp - don't know why.

Re: I need a cheapish SS practise amp.

I've got no idea on the going rate for a Lead 12 combo...but I found this guy on Fleabay;

Red Lead 12 Stack

When I went shopping I really really wanted to like the small Vox amps but they sounded really 1-dimensional & boxy to me...didn't "feel" right to play & the sound (hard to call it tone) was uninspiring to me.

I thought that $150 Live 6 was hipper...I actually dug the clean tone & the first "gain" preset/channel or whatever they call it but I have little to zero use for high-gain tones as a player & I never would've used the other channels. If I could've stored whatever tones I wanted in those 4 or 5 slots I probably would've taken that over the H&K.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: I need a cheapish SS practise amp.

Same here, I don't have any use for hi gain tones. The highest gain I get is something like Queen - Fat Bottomed Girls. I'd never need more overdrive than that.

That's why the Roland Cube seems like it wouldn't fit me - it has four overdrive modes and I'd only use the first one (modeled after an SD-1 i think).

Wonder how much that will go for.

Get The crate
Killer Distortion
but get a CRATE GX30 at least.. becuase, if you are intending to use low tunings, it will handle it.

if you like vintagey sounding amps, then you'll like the vox. i use mine along with a stratdeluxer modded Boss DS-1, and a MIM strat w/american pickups. i can go from a nice clean, to ac/dc like overdrive to metal like distortion and the amp always sounds good.

another good thing about the amp is it has decent reverb, tremolo, line out, speaker extension out, optional footswitch, and a headphone jack.

i'm tellin' ya, you can't go wrong with this amp.

Roland Cube or Vox Valvetronix 15 or 30 watters.
Good recommendations, Joe.

Hard to go wrong with these, especially for the prices.

Hey, doesn't the Valvetronix 30W have an attenuator? I seem to recall that being a feature. Worth the few extra bucks to have the extra power, but with the ability to control the output volume without sacrificing tone. It also uses a hybrid amp setup with a 12AX7 tube "Valve Reactor" circuit.

The mini-stacks are getting more than the combos are. The combos go for pretty cheap actually.
