I need a complex sound

If you're looking for something original go with a wacky Dimarzio cause honestly....less people use em. Duncans do many sounds well...but you tend to have the same tone as everyone else as far as pickups are concerned.

I'd also look into different amps.....and different fingers....that's the biggest thing IMO.

well i love my amp, i just need a pickup that will react different to the knobs on my guitar. and something with good harmonics. right now i am leaning towards getting a FRED. but still unsure.

Re: I need a complex sound

I'd say a 9.7k/A3 double screw High Order. The A3's great cause it has more mids than A5 but doesn't lose as much bass as A2.

Don't see A3 used so much, not sure why. It's a GREAT compromise mag. Radiusing the double screws will give it much more 3d punch, definite secret weapon there.

Jeff pups aren't widely used yet and he uses stronger mags than Duncan and his PAF's are a bit darker as well.

I went A3 standard screws on a Breed. Pretty cool, softened the tone and added some mids. I'm pretty much sold on 250k pots for buckers.

Been thinking about trying a Breed/BBQ hybrid or a Breed bridge/breed neck hybrid when I get the scratch.

On the Duncan side I made a Custom/AIIPro A3 Double screw hybrid that is very unique sounding. Use the search function to check out all the hybrid info.

That's about all I got.

hey bro, I got a FRED in my mahogony les paul when I was 19 years old...I got one thing to say:

dont do it!!

if you like space cadet alien tones, then it is cool. but it just does not do what you want it to. it is a good pickup, but gives that space age vibe...I mean most bands don't let the guitarist just solo all day...I say antiquities or something from the Duncan line to avoid that computer/alien tone

what do you mean by "it just does not do what you want it to"? Can you explain alittle more about why you didn't like it? was it just the space age vibe or was it something else too. oh and what's "computer tone"?

Its not focused. The FRED is very WIDE sounding with lots of harmonics. Its not great for blues and pentatonic boring ****. It can be very modern sounding, like Satch. Its harder to play than your standard high output mid spike PU, but its a pretty exciting pickup because theres lots of tonal information.

(I don't like it)

it does not have enough crunch if you are into palm muted 16th notes (machine gun sound). It does not have a full sound that the listener can relate to, moreover it it a sound harder to control. It gets weird harmonics and stuff.

In reality these are small nuances, I mean if you are listening to satch all day and are in a band that allows you to do solos and you know a ton of theory, it might be the right thing. Otherwise I suggest spending your $ elsewhere (wanna buy my old FRED lol)

i say a bareknuckle pickups VHII
...or a Nailbomb, it's quite hot, though. The VHII is like a raw, open sounding PAF with a little bit more output, its openness and clarity make it special IMO. The Nailbomb is more like a balanced but rude JB, its mids are really characteristic - 'organic' some would say.
