I need a dark speaker...

for an old Traynor YGM-3 2xEL84, bright as heck. I put a Red Fang in it and my guitars sounded great BUT, my buddy is a harp player. The amp is just overly bright to begin with.

I need to darken it up, increase the bass.

So, what 12" speaker? I'm open to Weber, Emi, Celestion, you name it. Thanks.

Re: I need a dark speaker...

Scott, more lows are usually a result of larger voice coil diameter's and whether or not the coil is "edgewound" or "roundwound", best recommendations I can make is JBL D series, EV EVM12L, Cetec Gauss...any!
Celestion G12t75 and the higher wattage Celestions......and although rarely appreciated, the Peavey BW's...

fwiw.....

Re: I need a dark speaker...

ive heard the weber michigan 12 has a huge low end, the d120s and evm12l and good options as well. the g12t-75 has a big low end but lacks the mids that a harp player would probably like.

Re: I need a dark speaker...

I like the Emi Swamp Thang with it's darkened highs and beefy bottom. The Texas Heat is another that has warm highs and big bass. The Canabis might be an option. I have an old Utah out of a 70s Fender that sounds fantastic . Much darker but not muddy. I have it paired with the Swamp Thang. It sounds so good I may actually move away from the brighter edged speakers i have been useing over the years. GB12s, Legend 122 and the Wizard are all aggressive in the hi end. A bit too much sizzle which historically I have loved but now may be moving away from that sound a bit.

What tubes are in that? My Bassmate was pretty bright and really likes the GT EL84C ( pretty sure it is C.) They were recomended by Savage audio when I stopped in there. Really nice warmer tone, I went with a hardness of 4 as I like em a bit squishy. Made a real nice difference. May with some JJ Ecc83s you can dial it down a notch.

I have heard that those Guitar Mates have a real fight between balancing the highs and the low. They can be boomy and bright at the same time.

Re: I need a dark speaker...

I was thinking the same as Kevlar, the Swamp Thang has everything that you are asking for and then some. I've got one available, check your PM's.

Another notch for the Swamp Thang. It's really hard to make that speaker sound bad, it's dark but it speaks volumes at any level.

Tone Tubbies. From what I've been able to tell, they're not as overly bright as other speakers.

Re: I need a dark speaker...

I have a new tonker and a new texas heat for sale if another forum member doesnt get them by the end of the week. I am holding them for him until then. I may have 2 new swamp thangs for sale within the next 2 weeks if they are too bassy in my new Voodoo cab coming soon.
