I need a pedal on/off switch

Re: I need a pedal on/off switch

BTW, another little test. Plug in the pedal and short across the two terminals with the end of a screwdriver. It should turn on. When you take it off and the pedal stays on, then it needs a momentary switch. If the pedal turns off when you remove the short, it needs a latching switch.

Re: I need a pedal on/off switch

A latching switch is a toggle, like a light switch. It sits in either an on or off position. It's used to hard-wire current in one direction or another.

A momentary switch is only "on" when the plunger is pushed down, like a key on a keyboard. It's used to transmit a pulse to a circuit.

Even though every pedal has what is practically speaking a "toggle" switch, this is often achieved using a momentary switch that triggers a logic switch (using transistors) to bypass the pedal. Boss is the most common example of a pedal line that uses a momentary switch to trigger a logic circuit.

The easiest way to test if you have a latching or momentary switch is to leave the pedal in an active (non-bypassed) state, then disconnect and re-connect the power. If it uses a latching switch, it will still be active. If it uses a momentary switch, it will probably be bypassed (because the logic switch doesn't "remember" the bypass state with no power).

I will surely take your word for it.
Just having a hard time visualizing that shorting the Input and the Output is the same as operating the On-Off switch
Will have to give it a try. :)
Thanks

Nah, you're shorting the terminals on the switch, because I assume the switch is not working. That's all the switch is doing. It's connecting those two wires going to it. You just have to plug something into the input jack to make the pedal turn on.

Re: I need a pedal on/off switch

OK I guess I just managed to confuse things!

@Ace: You are using the term correctly. I was just pointing that there are two ways of accomplishing that. The most common AFAIK, is a latching switch. It can also be done using a momentary switch and a latching circuit on the pedal's PCB.

As trevorus said, a latching switch will click when switched, but yours might not do that if it's broken. And after thinking about it, it probably doesn't matter. If the effect is staying on as long as the pedal is held down, then a latching switch will fix it, even if it originally had a momentary switch.

Re: I need a pedal on/off switch

a latching switch has a cam and spring inside

as you press down the pin follows the channel and latches

a second press and the spring pulls it to follow the other side of the channel
to release

either its full of gunk -- doose it good with contact cleaner

or the pin is broken -- wont catch inside the channels / replace switch

or the spring is broken --- wont guide it along the channel /works sometimes not always /replace switch

or its not going in far enough to latch -- check the back of pedal acuator for some thing missing
see if you can make it latch by hand

slowly press switch in
feel it follow the channel
use the force Ace

Re: I need a pedal on/off switch

Guys - been busy - buy awesome assistance.

The little plastic button that pushes - to best of my knowledge should not click down and then click again. At least I have never heard/felt such a noise in my working pedal.

Must be the momentasry thing. But I'll try that screw driver trick!

Re: I need a pedal on/off switch

if it come on when you press the pedal down
then the switch is making
screwdriver or not its on

until you let off

some latching function should be happening

probably in the switch
