When posting videos from Youtube, just post everything after the = sign.

That said, what is the guitar made from, and what amp are you using?

i've got an alder body and a maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard... for an amp i'm running a peavey express 112 on a high gain setting

Not gonna happen. Not with just a pickup swap. You can improve the sound of the set up you have but you wont be able to cop someones tone that way. Your hearing the work of guitars, pedals, amps, speakers, microphones, studio consoles, and all the other post production magic. Just a pickup wont turn your peavey express into a cranked marshall. Your better off approaching this saying I have this pickup now I dont like this about it what can I improve.

If he has one of the Transtube Express models, he can get a pretty good sound. Maybe not exact, (as it will be more American sounding), but much better than most standard practice amps.

That said, the JB would probably be fine, the Custom and Distortion may be worth looking at as well.

Getting a good sound is one thing trying to cop the tone from an album is another. Almost any medium to high output pickup will probably give him a "pretty good" sound but it wont cop an album tone.

Amen!

Get the JB and turn the knobs on the amp until it gives you what you want.

Re: i need a pickup that'll make my guitar sound like this

You're one of the lucky few people who's dream tone is exactly what comes out of a JCM 900.

They can be had for practically nothing these days.

^ took the words out of my mouth

that East Bay 90's punk rock sound is any guitar with a humbucker + JCM900... maybe sometimes some kind of Rectifier.

A JB in a Strat will get you close but your Peavey combo is not quite a Marshall half stack :smokin: Maybe that new Marshall DSL 15watter for a li'l bedroom alternative?

That's something I wish I had learned a long time ago... the amp has a WAY BIGGER IMPACT on your sound than your pickups. I see too many people shopping for expensive guitars and swapping out pickups just to plug into a cheap practice amp that can't recreate the little differences from one to the other.

Yeah, an all-tube combo with plenty of gain on tap is more expensive than a pickup, but it will actually make you sound the way you want to.

Re: i need a pickup that'll make my guitar sound like this

No pickup will make a Peavey combo amp (TT or not) sound like a Marshall half stack, sorry.

Re: i need a pickup that'll make my guitar sound like this

I agree with the general consensus, a better amp should be the first thing you get. Put the $100 that you'd put towards the pickup to towards the amp. You'd be surprised to see the deals you can find for just a few times more than a pickup.
