I need a versatile middle pickup

I've decided to get a hot rail for the neck of my fat strat to go along with my JB in the bridge. Now I need a middle pickup that would sound good in the 2nd and 4th positions (I rarely use a middle pickup by itself). Also, would I need 500k pots if all 3 pickups are humbuckers? Im concerned the sound of the JB might change to much.

Throw in a Cool Rails. They sound great in the middle and will blend well with both of your other pickups and give some quack in 2&4. I think you'll even use it alone too, it sounds that good to me.
And no you dont "need" 500k pots for either rails but many like it on the Hot.

Musicians' Friend has both a bridge and neck version of the cool rails. Which one am I supposed to get if its going in the middle position?

Go for the neck version. It will provide cleaner and cripser tones than the bridge version. It should give you more quack in the 2 and 4 positions.
