i need help urgently

Re: i need help urgently

i have the switch soldered and the two tabs on the left of the volume control done. the next part shows the 3 ground wires coming from all the pickups converging on the 3rd tab on the volume pickup and then a wire from there going to the jack and to a capacitor how do i accomplish all this splicing?

Re: i need help urgently

Remember, my drawing is in pseudo-schematic form. Those green grounds all go together, but not necessarily in the order shown. That was just to make the drawing "neat".

The traditional thing to do, is bring all the grounds to the back of one, or both, of the pots. Then solder another wire from the back of the pot to the ground on the output jack. Guitars have been done this way for decades, but you just have to be careful not to overheat the back of the pot, and risk melting, or distorting the plastic parts inside.

Another technique is to solder a fairly heavy ground wire, like a solid piece of 12 or 14 gauge AC electrical wire, (stripped), to the output jack, and extend it back a bit, like maybe 2 or 3 inches. Depends on how much space you have in the guitar. Then you'ld use that as a grounding "rod", or ground "buss".

The third technique, which I prefer, but entails changing the output jack, is to use a stereo output jack. With a normal guitar cord, this gives you an "extra" ground lug. I solder a little wire-bridge between them, and connect all my grounds there.

Bottom line is, you just need to find a "neat" way to tie all your grounds together, and make sure they don't touch anything "hot" on the superswitch.

Re: i need help urgently

well i soldered everything together and used the back of the pots for all the grounds and i have an extra capacitor. it used to go between the volume and the tone but ur diagram shows no second cap. is this the tone pot cap or the volume cap or did this have to do with the 52 tele wiring? its smaller than the square shaped one and is round.

Re: i need help urgently

Thats called a "treble-bleed" mod. Here's a good diagram that shows how it goes:

Treble-bleed mod

Usually, there would be a small resistor in there too. But not always. Basically, it just goes between the two terminals of the volume control that aren't grounded.

Re: i need help urgently

well i finished wiring and went and pluggged into my amp and tapped on the pickups with some acoustic strings and nothing came out. obviously this is way over my head. i just wish i could afford to have someone do it for me. to make matters worse im gunna have to drop out of the gig i was going to be part of due to my lack of a functional guitar. once again thanks a lot for trying to help me i truly appreciate it.

Re: i need help urgently

That might not be a good test. I just read somewhere, Seymour Q&A, I think, that acoustic strings don't contain the proper metalurgy to work a pup. Try tapping with a screwdriver - gently - and see what that does.

Also, you may want to add your location to your profile. It would be a shame if you lived in the same town with some forum bro's who could help you out. ;)

well saying ur a tech what would u charge for basically wiring up some pups? i need buy a new switch since the super switch cant fit properly in the tele control cavity. ugh i havent had a functional electric for almost 3 months now and its starting to piss me off cuz i bought a mesa lone star at GC and now have no cash and since no one will buy the amp i got no cash to get the wiring done cuz im a high school student and i cant find a job anywhere.

Re: i need help urgently

I'm not sure what they charge for something like that. I've seen estimates of $20 to $50. Its too bad you're in Jersey, or I'ld do it for you.

Maybe someone in your area will chime in. In the mean time, if you get a standard switch, it should be easier to wire up. When I get home from work tomorrow, I'll make a couple simple diagrams that might help you to get up and running. Even if its not full up, it might be better than nothing just for now.

But, we should be able to work through this problem. ;)

Re: i need help urgently

is it possible to wire the neck pickup straight to the jack for now? like as in no controls at all? thats the one id be most likely be using and itd be better than nothing

Re: i need help urgently

Yup . . . sure could:

To do it dirt-simple, do the top half. If you want to add the volume, do the bottom half. Sorry about getting the wires crossed there. The only output jack pics I could find had the ground lug on the top.
