hi, i recently came back to playing electric after a long hiatus of sheddin with my taylor, i play a lot of fast and sustainy solo stuff and need a neck pickup to throw in my hamer artist, it has a j.b in the bridge(which i use in all my guitars, love it), the guitar came stock with a 59 in the neck but i find it a tad weak for me with not enough brightness. any suggestions, i've been thinking a pearly gates might give me the liitle bit more output and high end that i need, thanks in advance for your feedback and a smokin new year to everyone, keep sheddin.

not enough brightness frmo a 59?
i'd say go Jazz then. heh.. great pickup for cleans to hard rock/shred leads.
articulate w/o sounding too sharp. works well with the JB in bridge too.

welcome to the Seymour Duncan Forums

Welcome to the forum.

If you want something brighter than the 59', the Jazz, followed by the Full Shred are the next logical steps up. Both will be brighter and have more perceived output than the 59. However, let me make annother suggestion.

You play a lot of fast, sustainy solo stuff according to your post. The best neck pickup I've found for liquidy solo's is the APH. I know according to the tne chart, it's a weaker pickup, but this is where it's secret lies. It is actually louder than either the 59'(n) or the PG(n), both of which I've used. I have to set the APH lower than any other neck pickup to get it to balance with the bridge pickup.

The thing about the APH is that is absolutely sings under gain. It's warm, not bright like a 59', but no matter how much gain you throw at it, it never gets mushed out. It's an amazing pickkup.

Just a suggestion. Good luck in your search and enjoy the forum.

Re: i need help with a neck pickup

How hot is hot? Alway a good question. The PG or Jazz sound tonally like what you want, but I wouldn't say they are significantly hotter. Maybe a screamin' Demon?

Take Jeff H's advice. And welcome!

Re: i need help with a neck pickup

Artists come stock with Seths. I have seen others say they had the 59/ JB combo though in an Anniversary model, but I don't recall seeing one like that.

in any case, I'm surprised that a 59 would be too weak and not bright enough

yes, the jazz is brighter, but I don't know if it's much stronger

Re: i need help with a neck pickup

Try a 1 meg volume pot for the neck pickup. If that doesn't work, a Jazz or PG BRIDGE pickup should do what you want.

Re: i need help with a neck pickup

i have an older chicago made artist(92 or 93 i think)it's 99.9% of what my mcarty used to be, and imo thats saying alot , it came with a jb/59 setup. i'm having trouble believing that a pickup called jazz would work for me but alot of these people swear by it so i guess there's something to it. i just want something that wil not get too dirty in a high gain situation(i like to hear the pick attack, which is why i love the j.b) but has a liile more output than a 59.

Re: i need help with a neck pickup

i was thinking a bridge p.u might be what i need, i might try the p.g, it looks like it has a lot of high end and a little bite.

Re: i need help with a neck pickup

Be aware of putting a bridge pup in the neck. Since some of them have extented bass you get a muddy mess in the neck.
Dont push the Jazz neck away. Thats one of the pickups i remember which that can take a really big hunk of distortion and sound still clear. (But the champ in this category is still the Lawrence L-500R.)

Re: i need help with a neck pickup

Amen Have mercy! That is indeed wht a PG has!

I'm with Aceman, the PG is going to have the bite. It also has a good thick quality along WITH the snarl.

I really like the jazz in a mahogany guitar. It has a good bit of glass in the high end that some people don't like. If you want a browner sound go with an alnico 2 pro, it still has a bell-like top.

Re: i need help with a neck pickup

PG is an A2 pup, though. Brown and nasty...which is usually not a good thing, but maybe in this case!
