I need some help with triple Humbucker guitar wiring

Hi guys.

I have decided to rewire my HSH Stratocaster. The middle singlecoil just was not the right thing and i have a spare hotrails to put between my SD jazz and jb. I had everything wired with a lot of mini switches and push pulls but that was to much options to choose from so i decided to rewire everything and just have the sounds I use the most. But with this fender super 5 way switch I have no idea where to start. Hope someone could help me with a diagram or something

Basically this is what I have and want to achieve with it.

Master volume
tone for neck and middle with push pull for series parallel switching for the neck humbucker (down series, up parallel)
tbx tone for the bridge
fender 5 way super switch
a mini push push dpdt that bypasses all the controls and puts the bridge humbucker directly to the jack

The 5 way should do this:
Position 1: bridge humbucker full
Position 2: bridge humbucker full + neck humbucker (series or parallel, depending on the push pull)
Position 3: middle humbucker in parallel
Position 4: middle and neck humbucker split to the outer coils
Position 5: neck humbucker (series or parallel, depending on the push pull)

Turns out this is what I use the most, but in a live situation a lot of mini switches are not at all practical. So hopefully someone can help me with this. I appreciate your help guys and thank you in advance!

Hi SuperFatStrat, and welcome to the forum!

I think I can help you, but I'm not sure of the polarity of your Hot Rail since I don't know which one you have... but I doubt that it will matter much since the rails are so close to one another and the center pickup is far enough away from the bridge that it's pretty unlikely that you'd be able to hear the difference between them. You say you want outside coils for the splits in position 4, which would be the South (upper) coil for the Jazz neck. I would suggest that you have the North coil active on the Hot Rail (regardless of inside or outside) in order to achieve hum cancellation in that position. Does that sound okay to you?

Well, I haven't heard from you yet, but I finished it in the way I suggested. If you have any questions, please let me know... and definitely come back to tell us how your project works out! :fing2:

I need to take a course from you.

Re: I need some help with triple Humbucker guitar wiring

Thank you very much! That looks indeed the way that i wanted it as far as the pickups go. You forgot the tone pot for neck and middle and the tbx should be for the bridge position only. But that I can figure out myself.

This is so awesome, and such a quick response. Thanks again! I will tell you if everything works. I know that those combinations sound good for my usecase which is bigband. Thanks to your wiring wizardry I can now easily switch between them.

Just so you know, I have the hotrails for strat bridge. SHR-1B I think it is called.

Did I say thank you? :)

You're very welcome... it was a fun exercise!

FYI, since you have the bridge version of the Hot Rail, and we're splitting that pickup to the north coil in position 4 in order to be hum-canceling, you'll actually have "upper coils" instead of "outer coils." As I mentioned before, though, I severely doubt you would hear any tonal difference between the coils due to the narrowness of the pickup and the distance from the bridge.

Really glad you like it, and anxious to hear how it comes out for you! :fing2:

Oh, and sorry about missing the other tone pot. If you like, I could pretty easily add it.

If it's not a problem, you could of course add the tone pot. That would be great! :)

This is how the strat looks by now

It will get a slight blackmore scallop, abalone inlays and custom headstock logo, relic black over candy apple red finish and a vintage pinup girl sticker on the back. And a new pickguard of course. I hope it will turn out the way I want.

I will post pictures when everything is done, if you want :)

All right... You asked for it!

Actually, it wasn't quite as simple as just adding the tone pot. Separating the bridge from the neck & center took a re-think of the 5-way since all three signals were coming out of it in a single wire. I had to introduce the tone controls BEFORE the individual signals left the switch, but AFTER the switch had worked its magic, depending on the position. Good thing there were two unused poles in the first diagram!

Anyway, enough blabbering... here's revision 1.1:

I took a few extra minutes to color-code the wires in order to make them easier to follow. Hope this works for you! :D

Wow, incredible work. I am always amazed.

BriGuy1968, you are the man!!

I just went to my local dealer in munich and used their soldering iron to wire everything and it just sounds amazing and works the way I wanted it to work. I am so happy right now! :) It wasn't easy to put everything into a tiny room under the pickguard since the pots are closer together, the switches take space and the vintage push back wire is huge too. I also used 500k pots for volume and tone and .047 uF big orange drops instead of. 022 uF. And it's hum canceling in every position. Some guys in the store tested it and really liked it a lot!

Thanks again! :)
