I need some hints from you shredders...

I'm currently trying to learn some of the basic shredding techniques but i've hit a barrier and I need some help... I'm a big Metallica fan and atm i'm trying to learn the final solo to Welcome Home (Sanatarium) but part ofit it severly hindering my progress.. This bit:
e|--17-p15-p12--------------12------17-p15-p12----------------------
B|------------------17-p15--------------------------17-p15-p12------

17-p15-p12--------------12------17-p15-p12--------------12------|
----------------17-p15--------------------------15-p12----------|

BPM = 200
16th Notes

Its this playing really quickly over two or three strings I just can't see to get right. And from looking around at other Metallica songs its a technique Mr.Hammett uses alot in solos such as in the song One and Fade to Black.

I was hoping someone here could tell me how they'd apporach a solo like this, fingering, techniques etc.

Thanks Alot
Chace

Well, that 17/15/12 pulloff looks like a beyotch to begin with. I've been spending alot of time lately trying to get the pulloffs happening, and that 17/15/12 looks daunting for sure. You'll need good technique to get that one. I can't do one of those yet without losing string energy. Personally, I would use my pinky for the 17, my ring finger for the 15, and 1st finger for the 12. Some might use the middle finger at 15, tho.

Best advice would be to start real slow, maybe around 80 to 100 bpm. Get it sounding perfect, and then progress in speed. Keep in mind that KH was a student of Satriani (or was it Vai?), so he probably had to practice like 5 hours a day minimum. My point is to be patient. You have lots of time to reach metal godliness.... much more time than, say, a 38-year old father of two, trying to learn this stuff.

JammerMatt KH was a student of satch. Vai was also a student of satch.

Re: I need some hints from you shredders...

I position that sequence of pull-offs with my pinky on the A (17), middle on the G (15), and finally my index on the E (12) when I'm on the high E. When I'm on the B string, I'd use the exact same fingering: pinky on the E (17), middle on the D (15), and again the index on the B (12). If you're not familiar with this wide of a gap with your fingers, I'd recommend that you slowly work on it with stretching before EVERY practice.

After pulling off one note, that's when I'd move that finger into it's next position. For example: after pulling of the A-G, I'd move my pinky down to the B string and position it over the E (17). Likewise, after pulling of the G-E on the E string, I'd move my middle down to the D (15). You get the point? Just make sure that the strings not being played are completely mute.

After you have the technique down, it's all about patience when it comes to building up the speed. A metronome is a great idea. Anyway, have fun! Kirk's got some fun stuff!

Ok right i'll give that a go and maybe get back to you in a week or two :P Thanks alot

I've given you the correct fingers to use for each note. Yes, using your pinky may be hard at first but keep going and you will gain use of your pinky, comes in handy for situations like that(ha, try learning the solo to Pantera's Domination without using your pinky... 19-15-12... would be impossible.). And as said before, try practicing with a metronome, or better yet, go download Powertab(look it up on google). Hope I helped you.

LHF = Left hand finger
4 = Pinky
3 = Ring
2 = Middle
1 = Index

I still can't beleive to this day that KH was a student of satch...ugh...no offense to any of his fans, but look at the difference between KH and Vai....Even Jeff Tyson..who was in a band called T-Ride...uh, not a very good band, mind you, but that guy was an animal...

I guess KH only took the 'blues triad with wah wah lesson'..hehe

Re: I need some hints from you shredders...

I'm not particulary a fan of KH, much more of Vai and Satch... but you gotta start somewhere :)

When ure comparing Kirk to Vai though you have to remeber that by the time Kirk was having lessons with Satch he had already (half... ok maybe a quater) made Kill em' All and was recording Ride the Lightning... so I bet he probs had quite a full schedual already with recording and gigs... doubt he had that much time for guitar lessons and trying to develop his technique... he probably shudda made more time for it but oh well... **** happens

Re: I need some hints from you shredders...

oh, I didn't mean that as a slight to you for tryin' to figure it out dude! not at all...so sorry if I came off that way =)

I just can't stand KH's tone, playing, vibrato..you name it and I don't like it...lol...I mean, he has some bright spots...his work on Ride the Lightning was actually good..it was varied and his tone didn't sound like razor blades on a chalk board...but he's been rehashing the same licks over and over and over and over again since Metallicrap's very first album (I like old metallica...I hate them these days...because of napster, they're general dorkiness and the fact that their music sucks, IMO, these days)..I think he's one of the single most overrated guitar players with a recording contract..

ok, RANT over...lmao...

once again, sorry if you thought I was slighting you for trying to figure out one of his licks...actually, the lead to sanitarium is very good...KH or not, that's a great lead..and I have to give him credit for it..

WOW? I didn't think Vai was his student....I knew of KH...Alex S. and The dude from Possessed....who later formed primus with that other bass player guy(Les Claypool)...ha ha(Weird HUH)

Re: I need some hints from you shredders...

Lol, no no... sorry if i came across like that :P I didn't think that atall I was just stating why I think he sucks compared to Satch himself and Mr.Vai. And i agree about his licks.. I've been playing alot of his simpler lead stuff like No Leaf Clover, Fuel, Enter Sandman etc and you deffinatly notice a very distinct pattern in his work... its almost once you've played one solo you've played em all :rolleyes:

good, glad we cleared that up, Chace =)

and you're EXACTLy right a bout KH..he stinks on ice, I think..lol

Re: I need some hints from you shredders...

Vai worked with Satch for about two years or so I beleive...that was before his Berkley days..someone can correct me if I'm wrong..but Vai didn't even know how to put the strings on his guitar when he came knockin' on satch's door ;)

you can see alotta the same vibe with some of their playing..but Vai takes it to the next (and sometimes bizarre) level...Satch is more earth bound..at least, that's how I like to put it...even thier tone can be similar at times...satch is also more founded in the blues..probably stemming from when he worked with a blues piano guy for a teacher at one point in his many travels..

Re: I need some hints from you shredders...

I used to be really into Metallica ALOT. But then I discovered Pantera... wow. Its not that I didn't know about them before, just never heard the right songs by them and never actually gave them an honest chance(same thing with Metallica though, up until about 4 years ago I thought they sucked balls). But, keep playing Metallica, it'll bring your chops up alot(from where you say you stand), and then go after harder stuff like Pantera, which requires MANDATORY use of the pinky, and it'll bring your chops up even more. I've been playing for 5 years, and I'll admit all Metallica is easy for me to play now, and pretty much all of Dimebags riffs(although CFH gave me a bit of trouble) are easy to me, I still have minor problems with his solos though.
