I need the Holy Grail of Amps = Celtic Content !

Guys, i am turing to my fellow forumites here in the fantastic SD Forum !

SORRY, BUT THIS MIGHT BE A LONG ONE !

I am back in the States - well kinda . . .

. . . i am working (again) on Cruise Ships (photographer) and my Royal Carribean ship, the Rhapsody, is sailling out of Galveston, TEXAS - man i love this State !!!

As sooo many might know already, i wanted a Celtic amp for a long time, and now my dream can come true, as i will have the funds to do so, and i am in Scott's back yard, so to speak !

Scott and myself have been talking about a "creation" for me for some weeks now, but i am still slightly confused as to what i need/want.

Please allow me to explain . . .

. . . i am from a city where NONE of my stores have a single valve amp in stock ! SAD, i know, and the closest city that did stock 'em was 8-9 hours away ! So i know very little about the amps that some folks take for granted ! FACT !!!

I told Scott i want an amp ( . . . and i do not hope he feels angry toward me for asking for more out-side help - as i trust and value all the SD Forumites oppinions VERY highly !!!) and gave him these guide lines !

* I might play as big as a 300seater club - maybe !
* It HAS to have a 110/220 switch - EXTREEEEMELY IMPORTANT !
* It must be in a head form - no combo !
* I will use LP's, Semi Hollos, and very soon S/C'ers - probably a RI Danelectro '59 Pro and/or Jaguar.

Music i will play :

The Cramps
Black Keys
White Stripes
Reverend Horton Heat
Lil' bit of Brain Setzer
Johnny Winter
Muddy Waters

. . . and then there are "ohter" genres which i did not mention to Scott, as i did not want to confuse the poor guy and give him a shock of his life with my first letter to him . . .

. . . Other Genres, will include Grunge (Soundgarden), Stoner Rock (Orange Goblin), Classic Rock (Led Zep, Black Sabbath), Retro Rock (Wolfmother, the Datsuns), Sludge ()Electric Wizzard, Melvins) !

I know there is NOT any amp that will cover ALL that, and that i will need some dirt boxes for most of the later genre's, but IYHO's, what would you folks recommend me !

The most common amps use in the anbove mentioned bands are :

old Marshall Bass Maters
Orange - old and new
MATAMP
old Bassman's
Ampeg VT-series

Seeing that i am on a ship, and working 16-17 hours days with only 2 breaks, i can not check my mail every hour as i used to - so PLEASE be Patient if you ask me a question !

I will answer 'em all, but can only check about twice a day ! Sorry !!!

OK guys, pleas ehelp me to create my dream amp for life !!!

. . . over to you !

Many thanx
JP

Hey JP-make sure that you get off the ship and check out the 'Strand' District here in Galveston, it's kinna cool.

In terms of what you're wanting in an amp, I think that you'll have to consider if you want a more "British" or "American" flavor to the amp. That would be a good starting point, IMO, and you could then move on to the power requirements, etc.

Most of the folks here who have Celtics can chime in on what their amp is like for you I'm sure. I'd like to join that crowd myself sometime, lol.

Good luck!

For the application that you described, have Scott make you an Edana with 120/240V power supply.

Get a 4X10 (Not 12) cabinet from Mojo and load it with 2 Weber 10A150P speakers with slight doping and 2 Weber 10A150-O with no doping. The speaker mix is great and you will end up with a greater tonal range than possible with 12" Celestions, plus a smaller cabinet to lug around.

Hi Farkus . . .

. . . would you be so kind as to give me some directions to this area !

Is there music stores in this area ? How far from the port of Galveston ?

I am looling for a few EHX pedlals !

About the voicing . . . i am leaning toward a more American voiced unit i think, although i do love the ORANGE AD50 (twin channel head) tone very much, but to my ears do NOT sound very Brittish !

Probably why i am also thinking toward a JTM45, as the gain (so i'm told) is not a screeeeaming Marshall tone, but rather a hot-rodded Faender - not so !

I am also thinking toward a Bassman . . .

. . . oh dear !

Re: I need the Holy Grail of Amps = Celtic Content !

Why don't you just buy an old Silvertone?

I need a 110V/220V multi adjustable amp ! VERY Important !

I want to use the amp is South Africa, but will probably move to Canada in year or so - GF is from Toronto !

But a cranked 1485 into a 6x10 does sound beautifull - just ask Jack White !!!

The Edana was Scot's firt recommendation yo me, btw !!! ;)

Can you try and decscribe a JTM45's tone - if possible at all pleae because i tried to Google it and did not get any JTM45 sound clips !

Yhanx sooo much to every one - keep 'em comming guys !

Re: I need the Holy Grail of Amps = Celtic Content !

I say get an Edana and use pedals for the heavier stuff.

If there's any chance your ship will be stopping off in England pick up a 240V Edana for me too!

Re: I need the Holy Grail of Amps = Celtic Content !

As an Edana owner, I recommend it as well. It is a very versatile amp that will cover all the sonic territory in the previous list except the heavy stuff. That can be covered with pedals. Oh yeah, get a holy grail or verbzilla pedal with it too. Man does it sound nice when run clean with a good verb pedal run in the front end. It's the best blues amp ever created IMHO.

Re: I need the Holy Grail of Amps = Celtic Content !

Just finished boxing this one up for shipping tomorrow AM. I am kinda partial to the gray/green tolex. The best part of getting one ready is that I get to play the snot out of it for a few days. I probably ran the Gretsch through it more than the Strat. LP was probably 2nd for playing time.

I ended up with a set of Ruby Tubes (Chinese) KT66's this time. Cream faceplate and some oxlbood chickenheads to round it out. I definitely like the green. Really dark and I'm sure a lot of folks would think it was black when they first looked at it, (depending on lighting) I ended up sending the guy a set of cream chickenheads. He wanted oxblood, but I think the creams looked better. We'll see which ones he sends back. :)

And, this was the first Father-Son owners of 2 celtics! Thanks fellas.

Beautifulllll . . . .

. . . Scott, how does those TWO vol knobs work ?

Are they vol & Master Vol ?

Thanx !
JP

Re: I need the Holy Grail of Amps = Celtic Content !

JTM 45 = Eric Clapton, Hendrix, Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Angus Young (AC/DC), Chris Shiflett (Foo Fighters), Jesse Valenzuela (Gin Blossoms), Johnny Ramone (Ramones...duh).

These guys didn't all use a JTM 45, but they used similarly voiced Marshall amplifiers and the Edana would definitely fill the needs you have bro. It's a loud mofo though so some sort of push from a pedal or an attenuator is suggested :)

No master on this amp. There are two channels, normal and bright. After suggestions from a few owners, I've "brightned up" the normal channel a bit. The traditional tone of the normal channel was a little too muted for a lot of folks. So, it's still not as bright as the bright channel, but brighter than it was. (it's a very easy mod if someone else wanted to do it to their existing amp, simpler than soldering in a pickup).

So, each channel has its own volume knob. Some guys will buy an A/B pedal to switch between the two channels, setting one up for rhythm, one for leads. Or as a volume boost. But, both channels share the same EQ, so that's something to consider.

Re: I need the Holy Grail of Amps = Celtic Content !

that is such a nice amp..

does this mean your willing to do 240V amps now? that would make me extremely happy =)

Re: I need the Holy Grail of Amps = Celtic Content !

That would defeat the purpose of fulfilling his dream of having a quality, hand-made (by one of our forum bros) amp. :)

I'd like one too but the truth of it is that, as far as I can tell, a silvertone will fulfill most of his wants at a relatively lower price. I'm not saying that Scott's amps aren't a good deal, they are. But I think it's a needless spending of money. (sorry Scott)

Re: I need the Holy Grail of Amps = Celtic Content !

I'm sorry, shameful bump.

;) . . . thanx !

OK, at this point, it looks like i am going for the Edana (JTM45 clone), but with 6L6 bottles, for that truely Hot-Rodded Bassman feel !

What do you guys think about it ?

Cheers
JP

I either jump channels or use a Trimode pedal to boost (Rather than jump) between channels.

This amp is LOUD!
