I need the JCM800 sound...

And I haven't the money for a JCM800 stack. Whatever shall I do? Is there pedals that can turn my AC30 into a likeness of it?

maybe the tech 21 sansamp stuff. they've got a purple marshall-y pedal that'd probably get you in the ballpark.

edit: they're kind of expensive however, $149 iirc. worth it though, each one has it's own family sound(plexi being marshalls, california being mesas, tweed being fenders, etc and i know i got the names wrong :p)

Re: I need the JCM800 sound...

Have you tried the Keeley DS-1 Ultra? Those are incredible pedals. My favorite "hard rock in a box" sound.

I've heard great things, but I'm a bit strapped for cash at the moment. That's why I was looking a bit cheaper.

Re: I need the JCM800 sound...

for cheapish, the MI crunchbox is hard to beat. Perhaps a Wampler plextortion.

Re: I need the JCM800 sound...

For low-gain JCM800 sounds, the Marshall Guv'nor is the way to go. For higher gain hard rock / heavy metal JCM800 sounds, the Marshall Jackhammer (example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N24AArgT5Tw) or the Metal Zone (with the right EQ it can pull off that basic JCM800 sound pretty easily).

For the Marshall Jackhammer:
Type: Overdrive
Gain: 3:00-5:00
Level: 8-9:00
Treble: 11:00
Bass: 11:00
Contour: 5:00 (off)
Frequency: 5:00 (off)

(The contour and frequency controls on the Jackhammer are for scooping out signal frequency ranges, and they basically suck.)

For the Metal Zone:
Level: 8:00
Treble: 10:00
Bass: 2:00
Mids: 5:00 (maxed)
Mid Freq: 12:00-1:00
Dist: 10:00-12:00

Re: I need the JCM800 sound...

I think I may have found a pretty good facsimile in my Danelectro Daddy-O. I set the Vox to just be starting to breakup, and set the Dano with gain about 12, volume about 11, bass at about 2, mid on 10, treble on 10 (all measured on the clock). Of course, I did some diode mods to it, so that helps. This particular one is kinda bright, but rolling back the treble, and rolling back the guitar volume to about 9 works great.

I need the JCM800 sound...I however will wait it out!! Ive seen used heads go for $700 on ebay 2204s. the peavey vtm120 is a good option for "just like a jcm800" amp for about $200. Id rather spend $200 on an amp than a pedal...

Really? I'm going to have to note that one... Once I get a job again and can start buying gear again, that's on the list to try.

Re: I need the JCM800 sound...

ya you wont regret it - it is a no brainer really. also early soundgarden albums were recorded with it. www.stonerrock.com forum threads have more details on that amp, Ive seen em go used for that little if ur lucky - good luck!! Finances are priority for sure, Im feelin' the pinch myself...

Re: I need the JCM800 sound...

Buy a Laney GH50L. IMO there is not a pedal in the world that can give you anything close to real tube overdrive/distortion.

Re: I need the JCM800 sound...

A John Bull by Toadworks nails a JCM800 tone. Ben Franklin will get you a new one, used, even cheaper.

Re: I need the JCM800 sound...

be patient. Save up. I had an 800 combo in the 80s and a 900 stack in the 90s. I reckon getting marshall type crunch with a vox is **** near impossible. Voxes sound great anyway in the meantime. But if you cant wait, the MI Tube Zone is really flexible as well as natural sounding pedal unit. It has a pre gain bass control as well as post gain tone, mid, ans presence so you can really tailor the response and sound so it works with various amps. I use it with a fender amp and can get really convincing marshall type tones. I has rendered all my other od/dist units to the dusty bottom drawer.
I saw a marshall amp called "vintage modern" in a shop recently. Does anyone know how these would go if an old 800 is just not available?

I think I would rather have the VM instead of an 800 myself.

A lot of 800's were modified, and a lot of the mystic today is based on some famous modified versions, I think. There are two very different sounding stock 800 models, and I'm not sure which sound people are refering to when they say the "800 sound"? Is it the 2205/10, or 2203/4, or a modded version of either?
