I bought me a new MIM Fender strat. and bought my son a used epiphone G400 W/ SD pickups. the 400 sounds great. i want to develope a sound with my strat and cant. If you mute the fat strings lightly around the 12th fret you get a nice hollow sound but it sounds flat a tingy at all other frets. I like heavy metal riffs a want to get that deep hollow sound when muting all over the board. what pickups do i need?

What kind of setup ? S-S-S or H-H, what ? If its a single coil guitar then the Hot Rail is the ticket, humbucker a SH-5 Custom.

If you want some heavier palm muting then one of the single size humbuckers or stacked single coils are going to be what you're looking for. I've tried both the Lil' Demon and the Lil 59, and really loved the Lil59'. It will do great rock tones and hold it's own in spite of the fact that it's not a full size bucker. I haven't tried the hot rails, but tend to shy away from such high ouput pickups. That's just personal taste though.

For the middle and neck I think either the APS or the Texas Hot Antiquity singles. The APS will be smoother and blusier, and the Antiquities should have more chime and shimmer, like strats of the 50's and 60's. There are ton's of other choices in singles, but after trying the duckbuckers I realized that I really like the tone of true single coils better...again, just personal preference.

A true rock Strat that will really do a lot of things would be:

Lil 59'/APS/APS
Lil 59'/Ant/Ant

Just my $.02

steal the pickups out of the g-400 :D

but depending on which configuration on the strat:

S-S-S: hotrails bridge, lil 59 middle, jb jr neck

H-S-S: SH-5 custom bridge, lil 59 middle, jb. jr neck

the Custom is a really great bridge pickup, i have one in my charvel and it's just amazing.
