I need to try some Dimarzio pickups.

Re: I need to try some Dimarzio pickups.

My experience with DM is that, Evolution in a mahogany guitar sounds warm, not gritty, even almost like medium output, also great in the neck cause not muddy on the low strings like 59.

D Activator is dirtier and has more treble. Great for metal.

Re: I need to try some Dimarzio pickups.

I suppose I'm one of the few these days who has a PAF Pro in the bridge; like it - pretty much like the description on the DiM website. I did try it in the neck of another guitar and didn't like it as much.

Re: I need to try some Dimarzio pickups.

Why don't you try the Transition in neck position and let us know what you think? The demos I have heard so far sound very nice but I have not tried it myself yet.

Re: I need to try some Dimarzio pickups.

^I have a cruiser bridge in the neck, at times I feel it would have been better to go with the vintage blues, fast track1 or injector neck instead. I like the Area 67 in the middle though. I've found that with the pickup height set lower, it begins to sound more like a vintage single coil, the 2&4 positions also benefit from it as well. Also I have 500k tone&vol pots, leaving the tone pot on full gives a very good quack but with it turned down the quack suffers but the pickup on its own sounds rounder, smoother & proper to my ears.
I need to master the art of quickly rolling the pots with my pinky finger

Re: I need to try some Dimarzio pickups.

The Tone Zone is an amazing bridge pickup, and it splits really well. I like it hooked up with just a volume control.

Re: I need to try some Dimarzio pickups.

I've always loved the Tone Zone, but I've only tried it in a poplar body Jackson Dinky and an alder body BC Rich Gunslinger.
As far as the Norton... just put one in my all mahogany Hamer Special (replaced the original Duncan JB, kept the '59 in the neck)... love it! The Norton has lots of mids and is real tight, a cross between modern and vintage sound.

Re: I need to try some Dimarzio pickups.

Nice. I LOVE my Destroyer. It totally resonates when you play it. I can get some sweet pinch harmonics acoustically, it's insane.

Is yours paired with an Air Norton?

And yes, I second the love for the Liquifire.

Indeed it is paired with an Air Norton. The Air Norton has quite a bit less output, but it's a really thick and creamy pick-up. Real bluesy and warm. I especially like it in the Destroyer.

Re: I need to try some Dimarzio pickups.

I've got the EBMM/Axis pups in my 25th anniversary and the Steve Morse set in my Y2D Dark Lord.

IIRC the Air Norton and Andy Timmons are the closest to the EBMM set...that said they sound fantastic. I don't know what the deal is but I can play songs that were originally done on PAFs and the EBMM Dimarzios sound PAF-y. I can then go to something heavy and hard and they STILL work well.

I just got the Morse at Christmas (present from my wife so I had it for a month before HAVING it) but they are warm, thick and clear and I've been impressed.

Re: I need to try some Dimarzio pickups.

Despite previous comments, I would say give the Fred a consideration - I have one in a basswood bodied 25" scale guitar, and it sounds very nice - even under high gain.

Re: I need to try some Dimarzio pickups.

i've tried a lot of dimarzios. i've found some that i love for my applications, and some that haven't worked well for me, but in general they are very cool.

some stand outs:
36th anniversaries: AWESOME. i love these things. i have a set in my PRS SE that turned a great axe into an incredible one. i have another that's going back into the bridge slot on my strat because i really like the HSS setup in that guitar, and it's the best fit i've found with single coils. speaking of which...

dimarzio area 67: sounds like a vintage single coil with no noise. i love this model. i have a 58 in the middle position which is just ok, and i got rid of a 61 because it didn't work for me, but other folks seem to like them. the 67 is killer, though.

d activators: these were the ultimate answer for my Parker Nitefly M. i tried a few different sets in that guitar, which has a darker character to it. these pickups are just awesome in mahogany, and not just for heavy stuff. they are bright, but not in a bad way. they make your tone knob a real shaping tool for the sound. the neck model, especially, sounds gorgeous clean, and splits very well. i like these so much that i put a set into my mahogany 7string, too. hot, balanced, tight, but very versatile.

crunch lab/liquifire: i tried these out in a couple guitars, and they weren't my thing. a lot of guys love them. these sound great when other people play them, especially JP, but for me, the d activators were a much better solution.

breeds: awesome. just awesome. great set. i would get another set in a heartbeat if i had the right axe to put them in...warm but clear, vintage but modern, etc.

steve's special: super cool pickup that i probably didn't give a fair shot. lots of bass and treble, reduced mids, and high output with a "clean" character to the sound. not perfect for me, but i was on a JP kick at the time and needed to try it. i think in the right guitar, it could be great.

air norton: another one that i couldn't bond with. some of the best tones i got out of this one were from high gain in the bridge position, which yielded some super cool tones. the harmonics are crazy. in the end it wasn't what i wanted, but i can't fault the pickup. very warm. another one that sounds better when other guys play it.

there are more, but those are probably the big ones. winners for me are the 36ths, d activators, and breeds.

Re: I need to try some Dimarzio pickups.

The DiMarzios seems to be best for me at filling a need in the neck position. The LF and HFH are great for what I want from a neck pickup. No tweaking or missing needed. The Axis neck model is also great.

I have a HS-2 that came with a guitar that totally serviceable for what it does. It's never blown me away, but I haven't found anything that's worth the trouble of replacing it with.

Also have a Super 3 that came stock. Good for what it does, but I can tell where there's a bit of a flat character to it.

There is a Blaze set in my 7-string and they wear me out. Sterile and a little harsh.

The AT-1 and the Axis bridge have been great bridge models. The Axis cleans up really nice.

DiMarzio likes to say the TZ is close to the Axis bridge. I think the Axis splits the difference between the TZ and the AT-1. Didn't they both start out as prototypes for the EVH?

Re: I need to try some Dimarzio pickups.

D activator, Evolution, Air Norton, Liquifire and crunch lab. try these ones Q: P

Personally, I didn't care for the Crunch Lab--cool pickup but was one-dimensional IMO. But I only tried that in a alder body Jackson. I've had the Liquifire in alder and basswood–sounds amazing in both!
