I need to vent to someone...

So, I finally got all the pieces I needed for installing my SHPR-2, two triple shots, and 3 new push pull pots in my Schecter s-1 elite.(yes, I know that's a bit overkill but i needed new pots anyway and I thought "what the hell")

I hooked up my triple shots to my pickups (sh-2n in the neck) and pulled out my old pots in order to install my new ones. Lo and behold, the new pots are too wide for my guitar!!! I was looking forward so much to playing my new hot p-rails tonight too.

Does anyone know if routing out a little for the pots is a common practice for most guitar shops? I don't want to mess my guitar up or anything.

I do have to say, these creme triple shots look sexy in my guitar. I have a very dark black cherry s-1 elite with that creme binding around the body and neck. It came with black pickup rings originally, but these creme triple shots make it look so much better.

the new pots are too wide for my guitar!!!

Had you look at ANY You Tube video about changing pots or harnesses in an import guitar, you'd knew the necessity to widen the pot's holes to accomodate CTS or any other imperial measured pots, which are wider than say Alpha pots (which are metric).

Just take a reamer or a drill with the right dimension bit and get it over with. No need to vent, this is just ordinary administration in the world of modding guitars.

Here you have just one of the many videos. Enjoy!

HTH,

Hey Conker, don't worry!

It's perfectly normal to make adjustments when changing things!

Just take your time, and it doesn't have to be perfect, the holes will be all covered up anyway!

:)

Re: I need to vent to someone...

I had this same problem with my S.

I solved the problem using physical force. I twisted the pot in until it fit.

Re: I need to vent to someone...

+1 on widening the holes. It'll be easy, since the holes are already drilled. Just MAKE SURE that the bit you're using is the right size. I want to say that CTS and other non-metric pots are 3/8ths, but please, please don't take my word for it. I'm just too lazy to use google.

Re: I need to vent to someone...

On my beloved epi LP i just took out ye olde soldering iron and went in lil circles with the tip of the iron, a little bit at a time, and before I knew it, my room smelled like incense and the holes were big enough.
Did the same thing with a tele pickguard for a neck pickup and a strat pickguard for cts pots.
It's the one thing I HATE about about import guitars. I have to find stuff that fits and historically I haven't been one to ask around about sizes before hand.

HTH,

The pots I got are actually Actually Alpha pots. I stopped by my local guitar shop today and the guy told me that they have a friend they use for routing jobs who makes custom cabinets and such.

When it comes to wiring and such, I trust me the most as I've done that kind of stuff semi-professionally (harness making and such). But routing an important piece of maple...i'll leave that to the professionals.

Thnx for the input guys. I just really want to play with my hot p-rails and don't want to have to wait for another week or so =(
