Ok...I thought we as guitar players had moved past the "how fast/how many notes can you play" ****...I guess not!
Also, who ever mentioned the lack of gain and the dryness of that...there was so much gain at some points it was hard to tell what was being played plus all the reverb...
Not only was the tone terrible the playing was about as fresh and exciting as a dog taking a crap...Im with GJ...I'd much rather play like (and listen to) guys like Jeff Back, Billy G, Mike Henderson or Joe Perry...those guys are real players IMO.

i think there should be a balance- speed is just one component, but an important (and fun) one. There are wonderful players who have all the taste in the world, plus speed (McLaughlin, Morse, Holdsworth). That being said, I couldn't see myself being a guitarist in a 4-chord per song band for very long- it would bore me as much as playing 10000 notes a second the whole time.

Yes, he's still not as fast as John McLaughlin was in his prime, and no where near as musical. McLaughlin used speed to bring intensity and passion to his artistic extrapolations. This he did well. Probably better than anyone before or since. In McLaughlins work, the speed was used to enhance the artistic composition, the composition wasn't simply a vehicle to showcase the shredding, as is the case with most. Speed and artistic merit can be had at the same time, but it usually takes someone like a McLaughlin to pull it off.

The Dinosaur Rock Guitar website says that good guitar playing is comprised of four elements - melody, attitude, emotion and chops.
Being able to play fast falls under the chops section... what about the other three?

Fast playing can be emotional. I can list many examples!
The problem is some guitar players think speed can replace other elements of guitar playing... and when they do, the playing suddenly feels stale to the listener's ear.

when you are playing that fast it doesnt matter what notes you hit since you cant even hear them like Joe Satriani says...so yes I think Ygnywie still pwns this guy

From his playing, I could only catch some cheesy classical chord progressions here and there. The rest was a wankfest... and a pretty boring one at that. Besides, he's pretty damn fast but not insanely fast either. Rusty Cooley, Francesco Fareri and Michael Angelo are even faster.

I would rather listen to something that was catchy. This goes so fast that if there was something no one would be able to hear it...It would have gone by too fast.

Amazing technique but it was wasted on what sounded to me like mindless noodling. If you're going to do the classical shred thing remember, some of the most moving passages in classical music are the ones that start slow and build from there.

Hmmm..wonder how many of you listen to classical music? Doesn't sound much different than any number of non guitar classical compositions to me. Plenty "musical".
I love watching that kind of flowing technique.......so many of the Varney kids are really STIFF players to watch (and even sound that way)....Gilbert...Moore...etc...this guy flows...and Yngwie does too.
I have to laugh when people say the "less is more" thing when something like this gets posted...IMO stuff like "blues" is absolutely as monotonous and boring after about 10 minutes....it's the same $hit, over and over and over, just like "shred" :shrug:

Like I said - not very musical - I agree with the person who said it needs to be watched to be appreciated because it's unlistenable.
I did think it was faster than Yngwie, but a lot of people are saying otherwise. I don't know... I guess it doesn't matter. I have the G3 in Denver DVD and my comparison was based on my memory of that. I usually skip the Yngwie part after a song, though.
Either way, the physical achievement is something akin to jumping eight feet in the air - pretty cool to see.
I remember seeing a video posted somewhere of the absolute fastest, most horribly unmusical shredder ever. It was atonal almost... but faster than I think a human brain can comprehend. Anybody remember that? The guy was sitting in a folding chair.. kind of a heavy-set greaseball looking mofo.
No way dude. That clip sounded like it was coming out of a Roland JC. Did you have your speakers turned up too loud?
