I never post threads like this, but.... Yngwie gets pwned.

Re: I never post threads like this, but.... Yngwie gets pwned.

That's pretty good physical talent, I couldn't move my fingers that fast in the air, much less produce at least respectful noise on a guitar. Give him credit for that but not my cup of tea.

I'd rather listen to Malcolm Young bang out 3 chord riffs all day, or B.B. King in his prime doing a few of those sweet but simple solos.

Or I could be just showing my age!:smack:

IMO stuff like "blues" is absolutely as monotonous and boring after about 10 minutes....
it's the same $hit, over and over and over, just like "shred"

Thats why you shake things up a bit.
LOCRIAN BLUES~! Woohoo!

Jeff, I'm glad to see someone stand up for the SHRED. IMO, there's nothing wrong with speed for the sake of speed, and that's kind of what this is. Just another element to the whole thing. You could make the same argument for drag racing... hell the olympics. What good is it to run a 100 yard dash faster than everyone else?... last time I checked there were no lions waiting to eat me. Yet, we'll watch the race, and we won't sit around analyzing what his motive was, or that he just smoked someone but had no "feel" to his racing.

It's a thing unto itself, and doesn't lend well to comparison with other things.

It's probably a generational thing as well - you know if you took the age groups and the opinions and did a little study it might be interesting.

It's also interesting that I've never heard someone at this level of playing say something like, "man, I wish I hadn't wasted all my time learning to play like this." You'll also rarely see someone at this level saying, "the blues sucks," or "feel is overrated and just a pentatonic box with some wiggling at the end." However, the opposite is sure as hell true.

And Yngwie can be one passionate player, I've heard some great "slow" things come from him... forget the speed for a moment, listen to that vibrato and you'll soon realize just how bad yours is (well, mine at least).

Re: I never post threads like this, but.... Yngwie gets pwned.

Well, I'm not a huge shred fan either...at least since I've gotten older...I grew up in the Varney kids era, and I'm a big Yngwie fan, and that's about it to be honest. AFAIC, he is the master and no-one else approaches it in a style I can listen to. But I haven't listened to any other shred in ages. I don't shred, nor really have ever attempted to learn it...it's not my style (wholly, the classical influence I like, the virtuoso nature, I don't) But, I can certainly appreciate the talent level..I wish *I* could play like that!

But there's so much repetition in other music, too..like blues, which really hasn't changed in how many decades? 6? 10? Blues has become a "formula" like Rap or pop-country or any other "popular" music. Go to any local club, and you hear the same tired old standards and the same old licks (and I play 'em too!). Change the key, and the tempo a bit..and bam...new song. I LOVE to play the blues, but I really cannot listen to someone else play it for more than a few minutes without getting bored out of my skull, regardless of talent level. It's like Al DiMeola or Petrucci...after 5 minutes....zzzzzzzzzzzzzz:laugh2:

Re: I never post threads like this, but.... Yngwie gets pwned.

Eh he is fast but speed isnt anything unless you got the mood and feeling behind it. It seemed very empty like it had no soul to it.

Ok...I thought we as guitar players had moved past the "how fast/how many notes can you play" ****...I guess not!

I don't think it's as much of an issue of "moved past" as evolved.

Most have...

....some have not.

Also, who ever mentioned the lack of gain and the dryness of that...there was so much gain at some points it was hard to tell what was being played plus all the reverb...

That was me...it was stated with mucho sarcasm.

But the fundamental difference is that sport is all about phsyical achievement. The same can't be said for music. If people want to take it that way, that's no problem. I enjoy watching guitarists do crazy stuff that I wouldn't otherwise listen to. Sparingly, but I still enjoy it.

Good point! I have experienced the same thing. OTOH, it's worth considering that people who exclusively aim for blistering speed aren't going to be overly concerned with feel. In the guitar world (or at least what I've seen), much emphasis is put on technical ability. 'Feel players' are more likely to judged for not having chops than it is likely for shredders to be judged for having no feel. Many judge them... but they can defend themselves with face-blistering wank! :laugh2:

What do ya mean that there wasn't any emotion?!?!? Didn't you see his facial expressions?

Whoops..... sorry I woke up after my head hit the keyboard when I fell alseep just now. BORING!!!

Re: I never post threads like this, but.... Yngwie gets pwned.

OMG! .3 bpm faster!
Anyone can crank out notes. Music is more than just notes per minute/second, otherwise I could build a guitar with an onboard computer that would pwn them both.

When it comes to pure, mindless note shredding, there's NO ONE faster than Fransisco Faeri. Atleast not to my knowlegde ;)

Agreed, Francesco Fareri is the fastest I've seen so far too. Problem is, it's not musically usable in any way whatsoever.

Now if you look at Theodore Ziras' clips (http://theodoreziras.com/video_clips.html) then you can see a shredder that can be seen as a bit more musical, and still insanely fast. Scroll down to Hyperspeed Videoclip.

As for Matthew Mills, it's impressive but I don't think I'd ever want to play that tastelessly. Thanks, but not for me.

Re: I never post threads like this, but.... Yngwie gets pwned.

Altough my Fav. solo is really slow ,i dig this guy ,He plays fast ,but it is not only physical playing.his face ,and his finger work is "not" jus trained.I like the singel notes and bendings he does ,in some moments. The tone has plenty of gain ,but he hits really clean.
