I nominate the Alnico 2 Brobucker as the new forum pickup

It's about time for another bulk purchase from Duncan for another Forum Pickup at non-Custom Shop pricing.

The Alnico 5 Brobucker was obviously a hit a few years ago, with these specs.

Aged A5 mag
mismatched coils
10k
4wire, with red/white wired to the higher value coil for splitting
No logo
Scatterwound
double cream under lightly potted cover on regular spacing
I think zebra on the trembucker version.

I'd like to do another Brobucker, but change two things. The main difference will be Alnico 2 instead of 5. This will put it in the realm of a Seth Lover/Custom Custom hybrid.

The second thing is that I think it should be potted just the same as almost all the production Duncans. The last batch of A5 Brobuckers either had light potting or no potting on the nickel covers, and ended up squealing till they were dipped again.

So that's my nominee for Forum Pickup. The Brobucker II.

Re: I nominate the Alnico 2 Brobucker as the new forum pickup

Interesting thought, Joe. I'm rather fond of the Brobucker that MJ built for me (on the Dmz designed bobbin for the Parker).

Re: I nominate the Alnico 2 Brobucker as the new forum pickup

The timing is about right...I got word that my Brobucker shipped today! :smack:

Seriously though, would it the ultimate bridge pup for a bright LP?

Re: I nominate the Alnico 2 Brobucker as the new forum pickup

speaking of "mismatched coils," can someone describe what that means... I always wondered that...

I'm thinking intentionally putting more (or less) winds on one bobbin of a humbucker than the other bobbin.

I'm in.

I think the choice of mags in the Bro I was probably the hardest decision. DonM thought A2 might get a little soft at 10K, IIRC.

I think the choice of lighly potting was a bit of a compromise between good tone, and being able to remove the cover for those who wanted.

Or, the ultimate neck pup to match the Bro I.....

Maybe instead of using the exact wind on both coils as the Brobucker I, MJ could make a judgement call on what she thinks the A2 version should be.
The ultimate goal is just to get it right, and sounding beautiful. Something between the Seth and CC in theory.

I still think we should go with normal potting, just because last time it was a hassle to realize it couldn't handle highgain leads, forcing me to take it out of the guitar, pot it, and reinstall it. I think my original Brobucker actually sounds tighter and less ringy now. It also sounds more uniform in contrast to the factory potted necks we're using. Just my 2 cents. :1:

Re: I nominate the Alnico 2 Brobucker as the new forum pickup

So you're jumping over my suggestion of the Ultimate 80s pickup eh?

I'd go for one too. An A2 version would probably match nicely in the neck when used with the Original...

Then again, I'm a pickup fiend... I'll buy the next forum pickup regardless of what it is.

Re: I nominate the Alnico 2 Brobucker as the new forum pickup

Wouldn't a fully potted, alnico II Brobucker be very close to a '78?

Exactly what I was thinking while reading the posts.........the '78 is what lies between a Seth Lover and CC. unless you are after a hot PG???

Re: I nominate the Alnico 2 Brobucker as the new forum pickup

I think you should do the bridge version with Alnico 3. You don't have a custom shop A3 thing yet. I LOVE A3 in the bridge. I was actually thinking of having the Custom shop rewinding me a Custom Shop version of Bach 2 Rock's hybrid using my A3 mag from an old Ibanez Super 58. I would be something like these: 1.Warren DeMartini or Lynch Super V screw coil and an S-deco slug coil(or lower)on an A3 magnet
2. S-Deco screw coil with Brobucker slug coil on A3 magnet(using the lower wound of the two BB coils).
3. High quality finest component MJ or Seymour wound version of B2R's actual hybrid on an A3 mag. Like slightly over wound S-deco or something with an antiquity coil. I guess the sky's the limit on these. You could go as high as DeMartini Screw and Antiquity slug or as close as S-Deco Screw and Higher wound BB coil. I've been thinking alot about it...but whatever I do, It'll be on an A3. Those things kill in the bridge.

Re: I nominate the Alnico 2 Brobucker as the new forum pickup

i have changed the magnets in two of my brobuckers to alnico 2, very nice indeed.

Re: I nominate the Alnico 2 Brobucker as the new forum pickup

Erm, guys, shouldn't we first wait and see what gaps do the new SD offerings cover before going for a new forum-pickup?

Plus, I think all the SC guys would really start screaming if we were to do a 3rd HB in a row while they got nothing...

I was hoping you'd pop in, since I knew you'd already done that magnet swap

I'm curious to know what, if any, changes you'd make? Would you stay at 10K, or maybe bring it down to 9.5K or up to 11K?
Do you know how close our specs are to the 78?

As for Alnico 3......maybe we should do that next year for the Brobucker 3.

The main thing is I'd like MJ to make the call on what she thinks, specwise.
Anytime we try to collectively come up with specs, we take a chance that it won't be that great.
