I ordered Alnico 4 magnets on Ebay and they are twice as powerfull as my SH-4 magnet?

From what I read alnico 4 is supposed to be a touch weaker than 5 with a flatter EQ response. Now these magnets arrived and when I compare their magnetic pull using metal objects, these new magnets pull 2x as hard. Note that I didn't purchase the SH-4 new so I'm not 100% certain it may not have been changed. It's definitely not a 2 either cause it's alot stronger than the magnet in my SH-55. Another observation is the alnico 5 magnets in my Gibson Burtbucker Pro are crazy strong. Conclusion... magnet powers are all over the place???

Under certain circumstances, magnets can degauss.

Sounds like the magnet in your JB has been degaussed. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as some prefer the tone; though it will definitely depend on how much/little.

Just an anecdote:
I have an old EMG 81 that sounds really good to me. I really couldn't understand all the hate for them. I had no idea how weak it was until I got an 85 to pair with it.

I did a lot of research on mags since i bought a gaussmeter. First a magnet loose a lot of strength if you compare the surface of the magnet and the surface of the pole screws/slugs of pickup. I hope you did not compare that, you did mot make it clear. Second: Every magnet differs from make to make and item to item. My A4 from 4 different sources differ the most and all of them are fully charged with my Neos. They peak from 570 to slightly over 1000 gauss, while the A5 come from 550 to around 950.
I read on this forum that the blend of A4 is not that clear and vary from cast company to the other. The strongest A4 is from Cermag UK, lowest reading is a Fralin.
Hope that helps

Thanks for the replies. I'm talking about the actual magnets pulled out of the pups. I was questioning the seller, thinking these were probably imported from China. With the price of cobalt apparently being alot higher than it was back in the 60's I was thinking maybe there might be some compromises being done in the mix. Interesing how it peaked in 2008 and is now back down.. http://www.infomine.com/investment/metal-prices/cobalt/all/

cermag UK: thanks for this tip! Now I can find mags in the EU without idiotic taxes or shipping charges.

Yep, they are fine mags on a good prize. Can anyone help me with the difference of metric and emprial sized humbucker mags. That should be less than a milimeter?

Not trying to resurrect this post but if anyone searches about alnico 4, my SH-4 magnet was clearly degaussed. I've compared it since with numerous other 5's which were alot stronger.
