"I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

True statement?

Outside of a general setup, string brand, etc., is there any single modification you find preferable on every single guitar you've had?

Something like "I use heavy strings so I always have to file the nuts" or "I love the Pearly Gates so much that I put it in everything" or even "All my guitars have Floyds, so I always install a brass block..."

I'm just curious. I'm looking through pics of all the guitars I've had over the years (and if you know me, you know it's a long list) and I realized that they're so varied, many of them so specialized, that there wasn't really any common mod I'd performed to any of them, though the vast majority of them did experience some modification of one kind or another.

You?

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

Currently all my guitars have at least 1 humbucker. Every humbucker I have is connected to a push/pull or push/push volume pot and is usually used for coil splitting.

A new "mod" I have done recently is add a no load tone pot to every neck humbucker I own.

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

Ever guitar I own has at least one hum-cancelling position. I also always use a linear volume control.

Otherwise all of my guitars are pretty different.

I really like the 80's Charvel Strap Buttons, so I buy a set from eBay and put those on my electrics. They just seem to fit/work perfectly with my Levi Straps.

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

Dunlop straplocks with the.exception of acoustics because of the end pin jack

Locking tuners for ease of string changes
With the exception off the basses
Just can't find any

Would like to say Tusq nuts but really don't bother unless something is wrong with the current one

I order all of my necks with a Tusq nut but I don't really consider that a mod since they come that way for me.

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

I have a few things I do to my builds, but nothing I *always* do to my guitars in general.

Actually more than one mod:

- strap locks on all guitars
- 250K's on most bridge PU's
- unbalanced coils or spin-a-split on all neck HB's

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

I take a hack saw to the wiggle stick...make it about 5 inches long.

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

Dunlop Dual Design Strap Locks on absolutely everything (except the Susanna Hoffs Ric)

Almost always new pickups.

On dual humbucker guitars with 3 knobs, I've recently gotten into the habit of wiring them Bridge Volume - Neck Volume - Neck Tone. So I can get that Les Paul/ Sg "woman" tone with 3 knobs.

Jems ALWAYS get new pots. I ream them myself because I don't trust anyone :D

I don't really care about Tone Pros bridges anymore...but that was a must for a while.

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

I always put a cap in series with my neck pickups. 6800 on most pickups. I don't find a need for frequencies below the guitar's fundamentals and it makes it easier to balance EQ's when switching back and forth between bridge pickups.

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

I dont have any mod mods that I consider standard, All my guitars are set up different. All do have schaller strap locks but i dont consider that a mod. The very first guitar i got had them then I put them on all others after that so that I could swap straps around and didnt have to use certain straps for certain guitars.

Also all my guitars wind up with dice tone knobs but this is more habit than a mod. The second guitar I ever got was an SG and I was having serious issues with in the dark on a stage I would grab the wrong knob. Was the worst when turning the volume off so you didnt feed back between songs then looking like a jack hole cause you couldnt find the volume and missed the beat into the next song. I didnt like the look just pulling the knobs off and having the shafts so i decided to drill a dice something that was very easy to feel was different and was wrong. Now I dont have the issue I know where my knobs are but out of habit I had dice tone knobs to everything.

Straplocks.

Hi Pass filter on volume control.

Tone Cap upgrade (usually to an orange drop).

Pickup and control cavity shielding.

Re: "I perform this mod on every guitar I own..."

Dual humbuckers straight to a stereo jack. Neck to the Ring, bridge to the tip. Neck humbucker wired in parallel.

Black hardware.
