I was trying out a 5 string jazz with a friend of mine who plays, she liked it but not me. I asked one of the dudes about flatwound strings and he handed me a US Jazz fretless. I LOVED the darn thing. I didn't find it hard to adjust to the lack of frets and my intonation seemed fine (against open strings I got it right all the time, I got the side to side vibrato good, easy to slide too). But of course it was 1,400 euros. Overall I'd say it was easier, funner and more intuitive to play than the fretted bass.
Then I saw the 400 euros Squier Vintage Modified fretless jazz.
Dual volume, 1 tone... And weirdly enough it's got the metal plate for the controls but not the scratchplate. So that would be to add as it looks odd. But WOW.... single out the bridge and it's very funky and such a niiice tone... The neck pickup is very sweet in tone too. I absolutely LOVED the thing. For 400 euros I couldn't go wrong, if ONLY I got 400 euros. It's my birthday tomorrow and even with that I can't afford it <_< I never thought I'd like a bass that much, much less fretless and that cheap.
