I'm so pissed at myself....:banghead:
I get the bright idea to direct mount my pickups on my Peavey LTD.
I love this guitar. It's everything a Wolfgang is (except without a Floyd) on a Strat body.
So, I've been working on it all evening/night.
Finally got it done and plug it in and no front pup activity:help
Only thing I can think is that since I've had it, it has always bugged me that on the pup in question, one of the coils isn't seated. It sticks up a bit on the top end - the visible end when looking down on it while playing.
So, while I had it apart I cranked the bobbin screws down on it, and it's neighbor on the other bobbin too.
I checked with a tester and less than an ohm or nothing registers on either coil. So I unsoldered it and checked. Same thing.
Next I unwrapped the pickup. It looks like the solder joints were touching the baseplate. So, I loosened the bobbins a bit. I get no reading at all now.
I don't have the time, tools or knowhow to redo this pickup, so I guess I have to replace it. That's sad too. These are some great sounding pickups. They sound like DDs but browner
The word is that on these guitars they were using some pups that they got sued over for using. Rumour has it, it was VH. So my guess is that they are the same or very similar to PV Wolfgang pups. These guitars were made at the same time Wolfgangs were being produced. Ive owned 2 Wolfies though and they didn't sound this brown. Maybe the ones Ed used weren't the same as the production ones and Hartley "borrowed" Eds specs.
Anyway, I do have the part number for the original pups this guitar came with. I'll call PV in the morning and try to get one - if they still have any. This is a 2001 guitar and they got sued over the pups and had to stop using them. There's no telling how many were made and if they even have any left from so long ago.
Sometimes I hate myself for futzin when this happens:banghead :banghead :banghead
