I SO did not see this coming

There's this band called The Subways who I've been getting into lately, particularly their pretty cool Nirvana-ish guitar sound.

For example, listen to their first single: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=TLIquztdlnw

Pretty straightforward raucous rock, you'd think. Nice SG and everything.

Then, I discovered this boy uses...

VOX AMPS.

Not the modelling ones, either. All-valve Vox AC50s and AC30s. The wussiest amps of all. The Indie Bedwetters' Choice. And he gets them to sound FANtastically heavy.

Now admittedly, he does emply a Boss Blues Driver a good deal... but still... I am surprised and impressed ... :headbang:

Re: I SO did not see this coming

That's a pretty cool song.

I'm not that surprised personally. A dimed AC-30 totally rips. Put an overdrive in front of it, and you have a pretty sweet hard rock tone.

Re: I SO did not see this coming

They have a very sweet OD tone. Brian May got some very gainy sounds out of them too :D

Re: I SO did not see this coming

I'd love to try a really hot Vox AC30 with an LP with a JB on bridge. Or with a nice Strat with some Quarter Pounders on it... I think Ritchie Blackmore did that already though, isn't it?

EDIT: And all of the above with a nice OD.

Re: I SO did not see this coming

I loved the tune and who would have thought about roller skating in the middle of making a video....loved the skirts!!!!

Re: I SO did not see this coming

AC30 and AC50 are hardly wussy amps. They get all kinds of gainy tones, even without pedals in front.

Re: I SO did not see this coming

Wussy amps? I guess that includes Tom Petty, The Beatles and the other limp wrist masses who define Rock and Roll. The Subways must employ real men to move those 80 pound amps around for them.

Re: I SO did not see this coming

God, that screamed AC30. I don't know why you're so surprised?

Yeh I agree sounds more AC30ish then when I use pedals infront of my dad's mid/late 60's AC30. I love AC30's dirty they tend to work well when on the edge mixed with gainier amps (listen to The Living End's latest album and some foo fighters not sure what though and you'll get what I mean!)

Re: I SO did not see this coming

I used one for a while at musicschool as well, with a DS-1 in front. Played 80s metal with it, got great guitarsound.

Because I've never heard an AC30 with a) that much gain and b) sounding that bright with a 'buckered guitar. I've only ever (knowingly) heard them clean or only mildly distored (like on the Beatles' recordings!!!)

Re: I SO did not see this coming

i just pictured rory gallagher with an indie haircut..

ok, i'm back ;) lol

Re: I SO did not see this coming

BTW: that band has a pretty cool sound. nothing that sets them too much apart from other "hipster rock" bands but still cool. the girl should be banned from contributing to vocals though

Re: I SO did not see this coming

The dude from Stabbing Westward had a pretty cool AC30 tone... He threw it into overdrive and threw a Rat on top of it. Really cool guitar sound.

Re: I SO did not see this coming

Dean Deleo from Stone Temple Pilots used Vox amps live and he has an amazing overdrive tone.
