I think I finally understand the Big Muff.

I just bought a Russian Muff this past week. Although I think this marks Big Muff number 7 or 8 it's the first time running a Muff since I bought the new Orange.

Master volume, 10
Gain, 4

It sounds so huge it makes my amp's natural gain sound weak in comparison. I finally understand what Corgan was saying all those years ago when he described his first exposure to the Big Muff. I guess some things just have to be heard through a really loud amp before you can fully appreciate it

I almost see the Muff as a cross between a Recto and a fuzz, I love it. You've GOT to try a Swollen Pickle clone, through a loud amp it's just massively huge!

On my USA Muff, I like to keep the gain all the way down and crank the volume up pretty high. It's a cool sounding pedal.

I love the Big Muff... but there is a huge difference between the originals and the Russians... the Russians are more controllable... The originals had more gain and fuzz than you needed..

The new ones are not bad and I am probably getting the new NY one to just round out my collection..

I too like to run my NY Big Muff at noon vol. and the gain at 8 o'clock into a very loud amp !


Saying that, i just bought the Double Muff last week, and i am about to go on a FUZZ-Binge !
While in the US, i want to get as many as i can afford !

I LOVE the Big Muff. I don't play it particularly loud but it's Uber thick and a real great lead tone. Weirdly enough it doesn't actually increase sustain that much for me.

It depends. I'm going to have a surplus of money next year so I was thinking about ordering an Electric EL34 model and keeping the better of the two.

Geez! So what do get, if you plug a Swollen Pickle into a Big Muff? Boom-chicka-Wah-Wahhh! I just picture a set of roller skates up in the air, with Ron Jeremy in between. Now that's a hairy scene!mg:

I hope EH has improved the Big Muff line enough over the decades. I really don't know anything about the Muffs made after the Seventies. People often say the Big Muff is a Fuzz...but to my ears, it resembled an overdrive/compressor in one box. There wasn't enough saw-tooth buzz, for it to be a fuzz, and the circuit was never clean enough to roll-back the knobs and enjoy.

Actually, no. With the exception of the early Russian Muffs, recent Muffs pale in comparison to vintage ones. What you describe is the reason I love the Muff. I really don't like TS-9's and DS-1's, the Muff is fuzzier than that. But, it's more distortion like and can handle chords much better than a typical fuzz.

Big Muffs lack too much mids for me to really use them.

The beauty of the Muff is it's simplicity. The tone stack is two caps and two resistors, there's an entire range of sound from Swollen Pickle scooped to mid boosted available with a simple component swap. Skreddy has cashede in on that by offering vintage clones of Muffs with better quality and more usable EQ curves.
